Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Manual?

Just curious. You would thing they would try to break into that wing of the Trek Franchise every decade or so.

I'd purchase the hell out of it, especially if it was as awesomely complex and steeped in technobable as the TNG tech manual. MAN I love that thing!

You mean in a similar way to you posting this question every few months?

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

The answer is the same as it was every other time you've asked this question: Yes, we'd love to. But we haven't yet found a way to do a proper one affordably, given the current size of the audience for such material.

The original ST:TNG was a mind blowing publication! They then topped it with the interactive CD ROM - I'm STILL finding new things on it!
I was a little disapointed with the DS9 manual - beautifully illustrated throughout, but didn't really tell you much. Would have loved a similar CD ROM - walk in to Quark's and look around! (and possibly work out how to play Dabo!)
I'd love a new technical manual, but can't see where Pocket Books can go with it.

^^ Where could they go with it? I suppose an Enterprise, or Enterprise-E tech manual. Better yet, something larger and with more ships. Call it "The Enterprise Legacy" or something and while perhaps not as fully detailed as say the first TNG Technical Manual, something that would take us through all the Trek Enterprises....from Archer's ship on through the E (or farther....Enterprise-J??).

I assume you have considered INCREASING the audience?

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

I would love to see a Starfleet Technical Manual that involves NX-01, Voyager, and the Enterprise-E. You could show some of the other classes of starships as well from the 24th Century and maybe have a History of the Enterprise...section too. That would be a huge book...but there must be someway to do it affordablby. I know that I would buy any attempt at another Tech Manual...I own both the TNG and DS9 versions and love them both. Always finding new things and I am trying to find the CD-Rom Next Gen interactive version.

^^I realize it goes against your nature to give those of us involved in the creation and publication of such material the benefit of the doubt...but try, anyway.

Sorry, my faith died when "Starship Spotter" was published.

Re: Will Pocket EVER Attempt Another Technical Man

^If that's true, then what's the point of asking every few months if more will be published?

Few months? More like every few weeks. ;)

I remember lapping up the tech manuals back in the early 90s. Especially when they (not sure if it was Pocket) reproduced the older fan manuals into store quality, high gloss paperbacks.

Of course, now that Im nearing 30 - don't think I'd be trotting up to the Barnes&Noble check out counter with Trek manuals under my arm.

Go to an out of town bookstore, where no one knows you. Or buy them from Amazon. ;)

I'm pretty sure that Star Charts and [Starship Spotter[/i] were published this decade. And if a book like Star Charts didn't make money, as was mantioned when you asked this three or four times ago, then what non-fic book would? I'd love to see more of them too, but I don't want to pay $50 for them, and I understand Pocket's desire not to lose any more money on them.

Well if you don't like their tech publications, why do you whine about their scarcity so often?

...and then hide them in a non-descript cardboard box under my bed so visitors don't spot them?

;)

Ahhhh...the hidden Trek life so many of us live.

Unfortunately, the plan to force bookstore patrons at gunpoint to purchase the tech manuals proved to be non-cost-effective, and not especially good for Pocket's image.

Be serious. There are ways to appeal to a broader audience.

Please explain. I'm sure the professionals at Pocket Books would be very interested in your "ways".

Such as?

This sums up the situation very nicely...

For the foreseeable future, there will not be many nonfiction ST titles from Pocket, though John Ordover said he tentatively had an idea in the works. Also: The Unseen Frontier: Declassified Images From the History of the Federation has been cancelled. Get over it.

Especially the "Get over it part"

Readers can change the title "The Unseen Frontier: Declassified Images From the History of the Federation" to any publication they might like to see.

Time for Paramount to look at allowing some other private individual or group to try their hand at a project. In today's world, books can be printed and distributed one at a time from someone's home.
