Will Paramount Have an Interest in James Gunn for ST?

Beyond seems a real love it or loath it movie.. you either think its the best of the JJ films/in the top 5 of all the movies and was the absolute perfect celebration movie for the 50 Ann.. or you think it was worst of the JJ films/slightly above Final Frontier/Insurrection/Nemesis and wanted Orci's Days of Shatner Past for the 50 instead

You know, it's weird: You've been speaking for months as if you're intimately familiar with it, yet I'm not aware of anyone else (besides Orci himself and the Paramount execs who rejected it) who even knows what was in the unused script. Is there a reliable copy posted online somewhere, such that us regular, not-employed-by-Paramount folks would be able to view it?

Beyond spent one day for me at the top, fell to 2nd place upon second viewing, then settled into 3rd after several weeks or reconsideration and a couple more viewings (including a double feature with The Wrath of Khan the second night Cinemark was showing it in September 2016 as part of their now-defuct Classic Movies line-up).

I look at my Kelvin films this way: Do you want a Star Trek that's mostly good all the way through? Do you want one that has a fairly good first two acts? Or would you prefer one that just has a really strong first act?

I rank all three pretty equally. All of them have faults, some of them glaring - some of the writing in 09, the khan scream in STID, and the dumb motorcycle/beastie boys scene in beyond.

The whole premise of 09 I thought was inspired and very 'trek'

STID is a fantastic blockbuster. What an exciting movie.

Beyond has heart though and I found to be the most emotional for me.

I think they all have loads of equally good stuff in too. The cast, music, production values and visuals are all absolutely first rate across the board.

I really struggle to split them.

What percentage of the people who go to see movies pay any attention to who the people behind the camera are?

To be honest, I rarely do.
I have an interest in such things (it’s rare I see a film without knowing who directed it—much like I don’t recall reading any books without knowing who the author was) but you are correct to suspect few people give any thought to such information (with the usual exceptions of Spielberg, Hitchcock, Scorsese and the like).

Disney announced today that Gunn for sure isn't coming back (there was a campaign to have him rehired).

We know Paramount has wanted Star Trek to be like Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder if the studio heads are thinking about Gunn now? He would be expensive, but attaching his name to a ST project would generate some much needed buzz for this franchise.

I know there's been some changeover at Paramount since STB was green lit, and I know SJ Clarkson is already on board, but I bet every studio in town is interested in Gunn and Paramount is no exception.

Uh no. His career is pretty much over thankfully so he can't hurt trek.

Heh yeah becoming slightly obsessed with the mythical orci ST3.. Its just those few bits of info from Orcis tweets and various descriptions engaged my imagination of a DOFP quality movie

Pretty sure the number of people who wanted this was a tiny subset of those who were disappointed by Beyond.

I'm not sure I was "disappointed" by Beyond. It just felt like small potatoes compared to the other two Abrams films. It is kind of like Insurrection (though ten times better) in comparison to Generations (Kirk) and First Contact (the Borg).

Beyond
is a nice, fun movie. But it didn't really feel like it moved the narrative forward in any meaningful way.

They could do a lot worse than hire him, assuming he'd have any interest in ST. I doubt he'd get the chance to work on a Kelvin film, providing we even get one more. But whatever iteration comes next, sure why not?

There's no reason to assume he would simply remake ST into Gaurdians. His portfolio seems much more varied than that.

"Into Darkness" is the "love or loath"-movie of the Kelvin timeline franchise. "Beyond" is the "Solo:A Star Wars movie" of the franchise. No-one actually hates it. But no-one loves it either. A lot of people think it's better than "Last Jedi", but the majority simply didn't care.

Actually yes thats a better comparison.. and that would make ST09 = TFA
