Will next Star Trek movies stay in the alternate universe?

I've not seen the movie yet, but of course already know that the movie takes place in an alternate universe.
Not sure how I'm going to feel about this as I am a huge TOS fan of show and movies (know TOS inside and out).
Just wanted to know if people who have seen movie or just know can tell if the next movies to come will have to stay in the alternate universe?

(Going to movie this weekend so don't give me spoiler ruiners please).

Thanks, guys.

If they have any commercial sense, yes they will keep it in the new universe. It means people don't have to memorize 40 years of backstory if they don't want to.

Isn't it obvious ? Of course they are going to stay in the new universe...

Do you think they went to all the trouble to establish it and leave the slate clean for anything to happen, just to go back in a possible sequel ?

Come on...

Rather than quote everybody above, I'll just remind you that I'm the one that started this thread.

Ok, ok I get it. The movies will have to stay in the "new" alternate universe. I have not seen the movie yet, so I really do not know of what I am speaking about yet.
The only reason I asked is that I'm one of those women who really adores the Nimoy "Spock" because of many reasons that maybe guys might not get. That one character is what makes me like TOS so much. (it's a girl thing).
I don't mind an alternate universe, but I may miss the old Spock. I guess I'll just accept this version of Spock in the same way that I accept the "Mirror, Mirror" Spock, who was cool by the way.

I guess I'm just a romantic female. Like to keep things old fashioned.
I'm really glad to see Nimoy in the film anyway.

(By the way, I met both Nimoy and Quinto at conventions. Quinto was very approachable and nice).

P.S. Don't get so emotional guys. I'm a nice girl. I just want to talk!

I don't understand why you couldn't adore Nimoy "Spock" even if this did take place in that universe?

But yeah, I think everyone is just edgy with the new movie coming out, and what will most likely be a torrent of negative threads.

Well, what can you do ?
Even if they did go back to the classic Trek universe for the next movie, Nimoy is not getting any younger.
So unless they clone him a s a 30 year old again you would not get what you want anyway ;)

It's old Spock/Nimoy no matter what the universe is.

It means people don't have to memorize 40 years of backstory if they don't want to.

Disagreed. Nobody is forced to memorize 40 years of backstory either way, as proven by TMP and TWOK - they both both work very well as self-contained stories, in fact just as well as Abrams' movie does.

Introduction of a radically different alternate timeline is just a cheap cop-out. Of course, it works well, but it's a cheap cop-out nevertheless.

It's a device that is only necessary on Trek because the fans who remember 40 years of backstory will sit there and tear it apart otherwise because it doesn't look like it was made in 1969. They told the story they wanted to tell with production values that would actually appeal to a 21st Century movie audience, while inserting a ready made 'pressure valve' for the more obsessive end fo the fanbase to explain it all away neatly.

I was mainly referring to the fact that quite a lot of the series are somewhat difficult to jump on board from the point of newcomers - Voyager's Ferengi story really required knowledge of the Barzani wormhole that they got sucked through in TNG. That's just an example, but the new timeline's setup negates a need for more in-depth knowledge to fully enjoy the film.

I did get more out of it than someone who didn't know the previous mythology, but it's up there with the great Trek films in that it can stand alone.

Hi, it' me again, the girl who started the thread.

You guys kind of helped me out a little, especially Superdeluxe and SalvorHardin
I am a die hard TOS fan, but now I am prepared to have an open mind when I go to see the movie tomorrow (Yes, tomorrow. I couldn't go yet 'cause I was a vendor at a flea market this weekend).
I am telling myself that I am going to accept the movie as an alternate universe in the same manner as "Mirror, Mirror" and any of the other parallel universes in the other series (TNG, etc.)

I'll tell you one thing, I have been ecstatic the last few days after seeing a huge Star Trek display at Toys R Us and the many displays at Burger King.
Yeah! Star Trek is back.
We all hung in there and we got it back!

(Passionate bunch, aren't we?)
:guffaw:
