Because the Doctor has always been a man, the same as Bond has always been a man and, before I get accused of sexism, I have no desire to see a Mr Marple or a Captain Ken Janeway either, and I'm the guy who spent 8 years writing a fanfic series with a female Captain.
I don't see anything that's gained from making the Doctor a woman, unless you found the perfect actor for the role and she happened to be a woman, but to just do it to be different or edgy...well I'll leave that to Ron Moore!

I rarely, if ever, see this argument from people who have been following the show for years and fully grasp the show and character of the doctor.
At the risk of generalizing (and sure that's possible), the argument seems to come from the casual viewer who sees this as a sort of sexual predujice and injustice that needs to be corrected.
Thankfully, those running the show fall into the former group.

I'm sorry but that kind of terminology is just so old fashioned. I think it's time the gander was reimagined as a goose...and vice versa.
And can anyone imagine if River was revealed to be the 13th Doctor? The resulting fan explosion would be way bigger then Belgium....
Actually, I think that River's existence pretty much fills the gap in the "female Doctor" market. Other than that, there's really nothing to be gained in my opinion. The current formula, a little reminiscent of The Avengers, is tried-and-tested.
Of course, if they ever (heavens forfend!) reboot the series' continuity, a re-think of the nature of regeneration might be a good idea.

It's quite the giggle that some people are simultaneously of the opinions that the Doctor just "is a male" and should never be anything else and that he should never show any romantic interest in a member of either sex.
Wouldn't it be simpler to just pronounce him to be without genitalia or gender of any kind? Some folks would feel their childhoods were safer, that way.

as far as i'm concerned, he's a male. he's been married and had kids. on Gallifrey. he's been married and certainly shagged about since.

I've always felt gender is the one thing that can't change during regeneration. I mean that would mean losing or growing certain body parts, not to mention estrogen and testosterone. Regeneration is already far fetched as it is, let's not make it completely out there.
