Why we love Ezri

Ezri II

Captain
Just a simple question. Why do we love Ezri Dax. Would lover to understand from the other people that uses an avatar of Ezri Dax.

Ezri had a very short time to develop, and she did pretty well. (Although, I have to admit, she 'bumbled' a little too much in the beginning). Too, she was coming off the heels of Jadzia Dax, whom many of us were used to.

However, from what we've seen in the 7th season, and the novels...she has grown from an unsure counselor, to a strong captain...

Her spots!

Nah (okay, that's part of it - she's really cute), there's more to it than that. She shows vulnerability and strength; we can empathize with her, but she's also a strong character.

She's also our best look at what Trills are all about. Whereas Jadzia was a Klingon in prettier makeup, as far as most of her stories, Ezri was a Trill, dealing with being joined, her family's reaction to the joining, and all those issues.

That's an attempt at a partial answer, anyway. She's one of my favorite Star Trek characters, and I wish we'd gotten to see a lot more of her (and of her MU counterpart).

I think in my case...Ezri very much reminded me of myself, at the time I finally got around watching her episodes. I was having serious anxiety about my job, not sure I was fitting in, and constantly walking on eggshells and very shy. I liked that she wasn't perfect, that she had that awkwardness about her.

Very similarly to me--I had a lot of education, but coupling that with what little experience I had...a LOT harder than it looks.

That, for me, was a lot easier to relate to than Jadzia, and I think even as my situation continues to improve (it's almost shocking how at-ease I am now, compared to where I was less than a year ago), I'll always have that.

I don't dislike Ezri, however, I really loved Jadzia. She did have 6 seasons to develop her character, I just think that throwing Nicole into the mix on such short notice and for only one season never gave her a chance to develop her own idea how Ezri would have become a more solid stable character. IMO she neve really got there, with the exception of the episode Field of Fire in that episode she really shined.

I think Ezri managed to bring something to DS9 that had obviously become a thing of the past for the more war-weathered characters - optimism, naiveté. As I recall, Garak references Bashir's darker, more moody outlook more than once, for instance.

As Hoshi_Mayweather noted, the writers did an excellent job of developing her character in a relatively short space of time, and I think that has a lot to do with she's so popular.

On the other hand, I've only read the first three DS9 relaunch novels so far, and I'm not that keen on post-WYLB Ezri at all :p

One reason is because Nicole deBoer is a talented actress and very, very cute.

But I like Ezri, unlike Jadzia had a clear character arc that the writers managed to do over one season. The basic character idea is excellent and it provide plenty of scope for exploration of both the character and the wider Trill mythos.

INDEED!

I thought that Ezri made it more interesting to understand Trill society then Jadzia did. Ezri was very important as she did in her way open up what is a joined trill and a non joined trill.

Because she wasn't Jadzia.

She was far more interesting, approachable and likeable.
Plus they were actually trying to do some things with her
character whereas it always seemed to be a nifty sidenote
that Jadzia was a joined Trill.

And she was much cuter.

She was also a true underdog that we liked to root for. She was young, inexperienced, with the symbiont placed in her unexpectedly. A smart, cute, likeable person, too. Jadzia, being very established, was far from being an underdog.

I loved Jadzia, but Ezri was always far more sympathetic for me, because she was more down to earth and vunerable. I guess I'm saying that Ezri was more accessable as a person.

Another reason I liked Ezri is the scene where she bluntly tells Worf that, despite all of their rantings about honor, the Klingon Empire is basically very corrupt--which helps to prompt Worf to take down Gowron.

And the fact that Nicole deBoer, the actress who plays Ezri, is as cute a a button doesn't hurt, either. :D

I love the actress and have been a fan since she played "Laura" in all of those Kids in the Hall sketches. I just never liked the Dax character in any incarnation.

I'm fine with the character of Ezri. I wouldn't say that I 'love' her as there are several characters I prefer to her - Sisko, Kira, Bashir, Jazdia, Garak, Damar, and others.

But I thought she was a good character. Really, her only problem is through no fault of her own - she came in in the very last season of the show when they were fighting a terribly exciting intergalactic war. And every second taken to develop Ezri took away from that war.

Not Ezri's fault...but true nonetheless.

That said, I think that given the circumstances, Nichole deBoer did a tremendous job and the fact that she is loved at all is a testament to Nicole and the writers. Because any other character coming in under those circumstances - replacing a beloved character and taking away time for a very exciting storyline, might actually expect to be outright resented!

As a fan of Jadzia for six seasons, I was astounded at how quickly I grew to love Ezri and how quickly I realized Jadzia was a poorly written character. As trekkerguy said above, Jadzia was just a "sidenote"; ooh, we have a character with a slug in her! Ezri took that idea and ran with it. How do you cope with another sentient being inside you? How does your family cope? How does the sentient being cope with all those memories? How do you make all those memories become something unique, instead of just parroting one or two of the personalities?

Very similar to how Seven of Nine became a breakout character, because the writers were actually trying to do something instead of just plugging the characters into the slots in each story. If they ever do a new Trek series, they should start it with no more than 2-3 main characters and let the ancillary characters grow naturally, like Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov did in TOS. And even be willing to let one of the main characters go if they're not working out (Chakotay).
