Why was the new "Star trek" movie a success?

I know it's a good solid movie but that doesn't always mean much. I've seen plenty of good movies that bomb and we all know there is alot of crap that ends up making money. I think it was basically a perfect storm of alot of things coming together that made the movie a success.

For starters it brought back the orignal crew. There the most iconic of all the Trek characters so everyone is familiar with the old show on some level and I would say it's even popular with most. It made by Abrams who is a rising star in Hollywood. "Lost" and "Cloverfield" and "Alias" to lesser degree has basically put him on the map. Also we haven't had any new Trek for awhile so people and also we haven't had much space opera either for awhile. Then it got good reviews. I also think the adds were good. The orignal one with the Enterprise being built was perfect. I think the other add with Uhura taking her shirt off and Kirk watching the ship being built on his motocyle were good visual hooks to get people intrested. Those two scenes I felt did a good job of selling everyone on the idea that this Trek would be more hip than we are used to.

I think it was a combination of things.

One, it was a damn entertaining movie.

Two, positive word of mouth due to good reviews and again, because it was a good movie.

Three, it had a very marketable cast.

I also think that a large amount of support came from Trekkies suffering from substance withdrawal ;) Yes yes, I know people will deny it (judging by responses in some other threads) but I've got the feeling that 4 years without trek has left some people itching for some more of their favorite drug

* More people see movies in summer

* Dam good movie

* Original cast that everone has heard of

* J.J Abrams

* Paramount's fantastic ad plan

* The majorty of ST fanbase turning out

* Getting newcomers and lost fans of the past

* Universal Critical Acclaim and Great Word of Mouth

it was all about the lens flares

:p

and the shiny, new gold-hued cast as the shiny, old, eternal characters we've so grown to love.

Good trailers
Good reviews
Good word of mouth

Yeah...
+ The "original" cast (Everyone and their grandmother knows who Spock is) with new, young faces

AND the fact that for once you don't have to be a fan (and know all the "facts" and timelines) to understand what's going on.
(IMHO that's another reason why the last ST movies weren't successful)

Good trailers
Excellent advertising
Great word of mouth
The notion that a lot of people secretely like Trek, they just needed an excuse to see it.

The characters saved the movie. Period. The story itself didn't even get that much praise in the good reviews. If the characterizations had been off at all, the plot couldn't have carried the story.

It hasn't hurt that Wolverine, A&D, T4, and such have been basically panned and have not provided the level of box office competition they could have, either.

Blinded by the lens flares, the audience was unable to tell that the movie was bad ;)

The fact that the universe was declining due to Enterprise's poor ratings and cancellation and the subsequent failures of Insurection and Nemesis made the Trek comunity really hyped of something completely different and this movie is far more accessible thus interesting just as an entertainment by the general public.

The cast was electric. People were entranced by them.

yep.

and, like I said, those lens flares? they made everyone GOLD.

even the sepia-colored Kelvin intro? gold.

this movie is fantasy material in the true sense of the word. it may not be the best story, it may not hold up in a science class (what Trek will?), but it's not reality, it's fantasy. it's why people go to movies in the summer for frack's sakes!

what was old is new again. fantastic!

It was a well made movie. Yes there are mistakes just like in almost any Sci-Fi movie and they have been nitpicked by this board religiously almost. But if it's liked by most fans and most non fans, that tells you that something was done right.

Definitely

Without the new fans we would be done I think.
