Why Was Riker Demoted?

I had to stare at that quote for an indeterminate amount of time to what it meant. Yes, that might be the answer

Note that Shelby owed her three favors because several is more than two and she says "owed me several", so she no longer owes her more than two favors. The only way that works is if she owed her three favors.

Are both sources a person transcribing episodes, one at a time; a fan? Or is one of them "official"?

Fuck the transcription service, st minutae are the actual shooting scripts, not just someone else writing down what they heard on TV.

They're great to read. Sure, occasionally a line will be reworded slightly from how you heard it on TV, but that's just how TV works. Occasionally, you'll find a deleted scene or at least some deleted dialogue.

In this case, the way Terry Farrell says the line is slightly different from the scripted version, but there is no "he" or "she" in either version.

I know of the Ron Moore quote, but I simply cannot reconcile it with what I hear in the actual recorded scene.

Wow, the arrogance is hilarious. You've been presented with unambiguous, authoritative proof from the ACTUAL WRITER OF THE EPISODE, but are still insisting "what you heard" is more correct. You don't need to "reconcile" anything.

You're wrong. She just says "Actually, owed me several." Yes, it is slightly ambiguous at first hearing, but listen again and it's very clear what she's saying.

Or you can turn on subtitles and see the correct version.

Or take Ron Moore's word for it.

But, yeah, against all that, I'm going to go with what you think you "heard." Gimme a break.

Minutiae has many examples of not being what's shown on screen. Many times they have earlier scripts, with some things that got changed

Some of the movie scripts are very early version (I haven't read most of those), but the TV scripts are the final production rewrite. Yeah, there are occasionally minor differences, but it's as authoritative a source as you could hope to find.

There's scripts there with whole scenes that never made it to air. Scotty being sent to Counselor Troi in Relics, & treats her pretty unkindly. A whole scene between Picard & Nakamura in The Measure of a Man, an extended version of Data's going away party where Maddox shows up, & that's just the couple episodes that jump out in my memory. Frankly, every time I've ever referred to that site, I'm always coming across something that didn't make the final product

Not that I mind that. I really enjoy seeing what they'd planned to make

You realize that all those scenes you mentioned are on the Blu-Ray’s. The Nakamura & Maddox scenes were edited into the extended versions of Measure, while the Scotty/Troi Scene was placed as a HD bonus to Relics. And there’s tons more deleted scenes in on the Blu-Rays (quality varies as some are from VHS while others are HD scans).

As I said in a prior post, there are occasionally deleted scenes in those scripts or other minor differences.

And, yeah, I also really enjoy finding those rare bits of unused material.

The Troi scene in particular was interesting because in the aired version, Troi gives Scotty a warm farewell and, at the time it aired, my friends and I thought it was hilarious since there was no evidence they had even met.

I wish there was some way to view those scenes without the blu rays. Oh, well.

Just to make this conversation more interesting, I've rewritten the script:

...what if...

Setting: Worf's non-Klingon Bachelor party

Ensign Jessica Lang- "Thanks for getting me the day off."

Julian Bashir- "Captain Shelby owed me a favor. Several favors actually. In fact, how'd you like another two days off?

Jessica- "Two? What do I have to do?"

Julian "Not much...(he looks her over)
Just give me something fun to look
at for the rest of the evening."

I'd say Starfleet wanted everyone back in their usual positions for a time to see if things could go back to normal for Picard with Riker there helping him

So then It's fair to call those manuscripts a final production script, even though they aren't really transcripts of what aired. I've never owned the blurays, & if I'm being honest, I'm fine with the episodes as they were released. Nothing I've seen in this extra material was much of a tragedy that it got cut

Yeah. Of course not every script is going to match what’s aired as there could be adlibbed lines or even lines that the actor flubbed but the director liked it so it was left in.

Riker and indeed the whole of the Enterprise were extremely loyal to Picard and had built up such an enormous amount of respect that he was probably happier to stay as a Commander rather than a captain. Don't forget,m prior to TBOBW Riker had already turned down promotion to captain two to three times possibly feeling that it there was more prestige in being the first officer of the federation's flagship than its captain.

It's likely that Riker had offended a superior or two with his attitude. As the Pegasus Admiral said to Picard, not everyone likes an underling that disobeys their orders. Sure, the Pegasus Admiral (I forget his name) was a bad one, but he had a point.
