Why was Mulgrew so polarizing?

I've been thinking about this. (Why yes, I am geek, since you ask. ;) ) In their own individual ways, each captain has been at least somewhat polarizing. I'd say Janeway was more polarizing than average, but each of them has been to a certain extent. For example, I have never really liked Kirk - well, OK, I liked him fine when I was 11, but once I got old enough to realize some other aspects of his character besides what cool adventures he has...euw. But I don't hate him - he's just not my favorite. For another example, I had no idea anybody could loathe Picard until I started coming here. None. I mean, I could see why somebody wouldn't want to have him for a boss, say - he would demand a lot, and that's not always fun (nor is it always bad) - but how could anybody dislike this hardworking, noble, dedicated man? Well, it turns out quite a few people do, at least if some of the posts in the various "Who's your favorite captain?" threads are anything to go by. And I know people who dislike Sisko, and of course people who dislike Archer. A lot, some of them.

So I think they are all polarizing, and the reason is that we all have very high expectations of our captains and so it's easy to disappoint us. But I do think Janeway is more polarizing, and yes, I do think her sex is part of the reason. Plus I don't think it helps any that she was in a show that some people dislike so much (this is part of Archer's problem too, of course). That surprised me when I started coming here, too - I can see not being crazy about Voyager, but I don't understand the loathing. At all. Jeez, there are shows infinitely worse pulling in huge ratings right this very second.

I think you are right, in history the greater the person, the greater the controversy that surrounds him.

One of the problems is probably inter-net related in that as we cannot see the other person who has posted, their opinion is discounted. The internet fosters a kind of “Big I little you” mentality.

The premise of Trek is that all Captains are good officers who deserve to their position. Viewers are going to react to that Captain based on their own experience or lack of experience. The character isn’t going to click with everyone. I’ll guarantee you that there are people out there that do not like Sisko simply because he is black, they may not realize that fact exactly but it would be at the bottom of their dislike. The same holds true of Janeway because of her sex, and even Picard is going to be effected by his age.

The person already uneasy with a Character is going to find reasons to dislike him. This is all human and understandable.

Where the problem lies is that by forgetting that the other person posting is human too, with an equal right to his/her opinion, you decide that your opinion is the only correct one and because it’s correct you tend to believe that people with other opinions are troublemakers who probably know better but are running off at the mouth (or the fingers in this case).

That’s what bothers me so much about the endless polls on favorite Captain. Everyone has reasons to like or dislike a character, that should be respected and no one should have to “prove” why one captain is better than the rest. How can you “prove” that any one is better than all the others? It simply cannot be done.

I read in a nonscifi genre magazine once, that the 17th reason (Of 80) as to why Kirk is better than Picard is that he fires diamonds through the hearts of his enemies. A quaint view from outside of geekdom which I can appreciate.

Wow, what an interesting topic. :bolian:

First of all, I still am a big Janeway admirer and I used to be an even bigger fan of Kate Mulgrew (which is all over now due to some circumstances which were caused by La Diva herself) and I've actually started with my obsession for Star Trek: Voyager after having watched 'Resolutions' as my very first episode by a fluke quite a long time ago. :)

Your discussion about that topic is more than amazing and I was busy reading all your posts as careful as possible. At some point I've found this post and unfortunately I have to disagree and to clarify, sorry.
No offense meant, Octavia, however I just have to put this straight.

Yeah. I saw her at a Trek convention in Bonn, and of all the SF stars there, she was the one who sat at the signing desk and gave (free) autographs until every single one of the (literally) thousands of people there had one. I was impressed with the effort and consideration.

Actually Kate signed no autographs for free at that convention in Bonn!

Fans who wanted to have their pictures signed by Kate had to buy an autograph-voucher in advance for a fee of 25 Euro which is almost $ 32.00.
The only few ones which were given for free by Kate were meant to be auctioned off to raise money for Alzheimer's (which is one of Kate's charitys) for a then annual public sale of fan stuff scheduled around Kate's birthday [as a sort of device for her fans to honor her] which was organised by one certain fan.

I'm so sorry, Octavia, your impression of Kate's supposed generosity did unfortunately appear more than it actually was. :(

I figured her voice had something to do with it. I remember someone on TrekWeb saying she "has a smoker's voice". I liked her voice myself.

But that wasn't her voice, Roxanne niether, they were both told that they were too squueeky naturally, and that they had to both lower the register of their characters for filming.

It absolutely is Kate's voice.

I don't buy it that's it's all attributible to smoking. She's had that voice for ages.

Her voice and mannerisms are more or less standard issue for the Mulgrews.

I have a fairly deep voice for a woman and I've never smoked. Well, aside from a few experiments in college, but those didn't involve tobacco...;)

I think this sums it up perfectly. :techman:

Oh, really? :vulcan:

Are we thinking about different conventions? Because I am a cheap, cheap person and would never pay anything for an autograph by anyone. I've certainly never bought an autograph voucher in my life... :p

I'm very certain that I remember that all the autographs were free (it surprised me at the time, as I've been to other conventions where they weren't). Tim Russ and a couple of other Voyager people were there (as well as some people from other shows) and they weren't charging either.

EDIT: Hang on. It might have been the convention in Blackpool (in the UK) rather than Bonn. In fact, thinking back (it was a while ago now) I'm almost certain that it was. Sorry for the confusion!

Kate Mulgrew is a major MILF, and in my opinion one of the most beautiful women in the Star Trek Universe.
