If you had a camera watching real life, it would look nothing at all like what you see on a television drama. Nothing. "Realism" in that sense is an illusion: basically what it means is that a particular acting style or representation of reality is widely accepted as normal, or has succeeded in convincing a large audience that it is depicting reality in an accurate manner.
Older tv shows look less realistic to us now largely because our perception of what is normal or acceptable has changed. In a few decades time (or potentially much less), what we perceive as "realistic" will seem outdated, forced, potentially comical and/or bizarre.
