Why was Atlantis cancelled?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i'm on the last episode of S3 of Atlantis and it looks like a pretty decent show. nothing compared to SG-1 in regard to the weak characters, but still, it's worth watching.

Ronnon and Teyla just feel like useless characters, while Sheppard is O'Neill divded by 3. McKay, on the other hand is great.

i read earlier that it was cancelled. did they ever give a reason why?

(1) Low ratings. The series had reached the 100 episode bench mark. Stargate SG-1 was cancelled for this same reason (the 100 episodes I refer to are the ones that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, now SyFy)

(2) Both MGM and SyFy wanted to launch a new series, Stargate Universe. There was only so much money to go around.

(3) Stargate SG-1 was doing well with straight to DVD movies, and MGM thought Stargate Atlantis would do well in that format as well. The economic downturn has nixed further DVD movies, at least for now.

The Sci-Fi Channel wanted a 6th series but MGM thought they could make more money with a DVD film but MGM is now in serious trouble so i can't see the film ever being made.
I wonder how much it has cost MGM to have the sets just sitting there empty all this time.

^^^ I keep hearing different figures on how much trouble MGM is actually in, if they can't use/rent that sound stage, it might be cheaper to just let the set stand.

Its say's on gate world a lot of SGA props have been sold. I even heard that Ronon's gun and the gate have been sold if that is true i can't see them making a SGA film with out the gate.
Also what would someone do with a SGA gate.

The person who bought it probably thought it really did work.

However I doubt they sold the gate.

Well, since a Gate from the Pegasus network automatically supercedes any functioning Milky Way Gates in the same star system, I presume that it was purchased by some rogue element that wants to send a big F U to the U.S. Air Force by setting up their own independent Stargate program. Perhaps the Trust is still out there after all.:shifty:
