Why the timeline had to change.

Shaper079

Lieutenant Junior Grade

In the very begining of the movie, at Kirks birth, I thought to myself here begins a life that will end on Veridian III. Far away in time and space but it begins here. Then I realised later in the film with the changed timelime that it wasn't necessarily so. Kirk, Spock, McCoy any of them could be killed at any time. Altering the timeline was essential to remove the constant stigma of a historical record, or "we know they are going to get out of this because..." Because Sulu hasn't had a daughter yet... Because the Enterprise B hasn't been launched... Because Scotty isn't on the Genolen... Because McCoy was on the Enterprise D... Because they all make it to the Kitomer conference in time to save the day.

These are all new voyages and anything can happen. The gloves are off.

That's one of the things I like most about this movie. As fans, we are sailing into the unknown once more... a feeling we haven't had for a long, long time. Freed from the shackles of canon at last.

Also has anyone thought how happy the Andorians are now the Vulcans are gone.

Could this be there chance to take control of the Galaxy and smear BLUE everywhere.

LMFAO

I never really like the Borg after FC and VGR . . . they were really cool and different in TNG, but they just kept getting bigger and badder yet were still beaten within the hour . . .
the Destiny books made them crazy and nigh unstoppable again

Exactly.

Couldn't they have done that with total reboot movie.

But why did they have to blow up Vulcan and kill Spock's mom?

Because they could. Well, they didn't "have to"--the whole beauty of this new timeline is that nothing "has to" remain the same.

And that's the crap part of it too. Do I want to see Spock die in a different way - AGAIN? Or risk losing any of the beloved characters?

Bad enough we lost Vulcan. Enough.

because they wanted to do it in a way that would preserve the original .

heck spock may not die in this time line.
if everyone is lucky no one finds the botany bay .
;)

The timeline didn't have to change. But it has, and we're left with both the promise and the pitfalls that come with it. I have a feeling that the Vulcans and their culture are going to make a remarkable comeback and resurgence. The Enterprise and her crew are going to have some remarkable adventures, some similar and some completely different from the alternate timeline. The possibilities, both good and bad, are endless.

To demonstrate that the gloves are off.

Technically speaking, that's exactly what this was.

They had to separate this movie from the rest of the series yet keep it attached.

Who the hell would want to see a movie about Captain Smith and so on. Not me.

This would be more believable if people didn't keep throwing 'destiny' about to explain aspects of the new Trek timeline. Either the gloves are off and anything can happen, or these people are 'destined' to be basically the same people they always were.

They cant be exactly the same people doing exactly they same things.

The timeline is different now. People who would have had kids are dead. People who directly or indirectly invented something could be gone forever.

New children are made who will do new and different things. New inventions from from different events.

Not to mentions what nero was doing for all those years. We know he killed a bunch of klingons. All these events will cause differences.

Well... Abrams seems pretty wedded to the concept of destiny in some of his other shows.

Remember Kirk always attracts temporal infractions, a "menace" the temporal police called him in DS9. He's already a man who history sticks to and not just because of his great qualities and leadership.

There is no way to know for sure for anything now.

Maybe someone who wasn't born before because events in this alternate timeline finds the Bontany Bay and steals everything or value and lights it up with a torpedo afterwards.

Thus no more Khan.

With the timeline being altered people will do different things. People who would have done things are dead. New people are being made by new relationships that otherwise wouldn't have happened. The farther we get from nero entering the alternate timeline the more drastic the changes will be.
