Why the Prime Universe was not messed up

The whole thing was a reboot all this Prime Universe stuff was so the ardent fans wouldn't go mental

Star Trek 09 is a homage to the original Star Trek. The 09 reboot can be compared to what DC did with it's New 52 comic reboot. Barry Allen Flash, altered time, and at the end attempted to restore the timeline to normal. He succeed but as a result he created a different universe separate from the the two he came from. This allowed his friends to live in the original timeline and live new lives in the New 52 universe. For DC it allows for all the comics from the 1987 reboot that ended in 2011 for to exist along side this new continuity they started. It's done so that all the great things the characters did still count (and fans don't have to dump their entire comic collections) but it also allows the creative teams to borrow ideas from the previous continuity.

For Star Trek it allows the creative team to reference and use alot of themes, ideas and character from the original series in this new reboot.

Star Trek couldn't be a reboot like the James Bond series. Where the title character is changed every several years or so, but each has similar and unique qualities to them.

In the commentary it was either Orci and Kurtzman or Abrams who said they thought it would be cool to show Sulu as a ninja. Ninja's use katana/nindoken. In the movie they could've said that Sulu was a bladed weapon specialist, but 09 Sulu explicitly says he has fencing training.

Not a deal breaker but you think Romulan would've tried to hit Sulu with disruptor. Not bust out a ax like weapon like he's some sort of Klingon

Minor point of contention for a minor nit: using a katana is still a weapon of fencing (Kendo, specifically). The only thing is that people tend to think of European swordfighting as fencing, but Kendo is classified as fencing as well since it is a sport with a scoring system. Kendo's been internationally recognized as a sport only fairly recently (the past few decades) while European fencing has been recognized as such for centuries. But STXI is also set centuries from now too, so the sport could perhaps be more widely accepted.

I myself would like to believe that nuSulu practices at least more than one fighting style, and if it involves both European and Japanese fencing, he could just say "fencing" as a catch-all for all the sword styles he knows. It also wouldn't contradict his Prime counterpart, either. Conversely, I'd like to think that Prime Sulu has a rather impressive sword collection of various styles.

I agree. It's a reasonable conjecture to make about both characters, IMO.

I'd be amazed, if he didn't have any knowledge of other styles and had practiced with them. If he practiced to use swords just for practical combat, he'd very likely explore multiple types and styles. As an art, there would be the enjoyment of the many aesthetically different uses of the different swords and their styles of use.

I'm pretty sure that what Sulu had in "The Naked Time" was a foil, rather than a rapier.

I can't recall him doing ship security like Worf did in TNG, but Terran Empire Sulu was a security officer, so Federation Sulu might have been also. And let us not forget Sulu kicking that guys ass in TSFS who called him tiny. Sulu is an all around combat badass, with or without weapons.

Something i did just remember though, in the 09 movie when Pike asks for officers who have been trained in hand to hand combat only Sulu raised his hand. We all know Kirk can fight. But are the rest of the bridge officers just tech/lab geeks who never took a self defense course at the academy?

In seriousness though, I liked how 09 Sulu was indeed a man of immediate (though not careless!) action, which sort of lends some credence to the idea that he was the only volunteer and something that's not always visible in TOS or the earlier movies. He saved Kirk on the platform and then Spock with the Enterprise.

John Cho was in the 1st 3 American Pie movies. All raunchy teen comedies that HS and college people would enjoy. At the time of Trek 09's release he ad made 2 Harold and Kumar movies which are raunchy, stoner comedies. I have seen them all, and when I saw John Cho as Sulu in the movie I was amused because of the work he had done previously. From low budget stoner films to big budget action films. Is quite the turn around.

If we remember that Harold's supposed to be the more passive, meek, fearful and sometimes more sensible of the two (especially in the first movie), then yeah, the image of Harold quietly raising his hand about fighting is pretty neat.

I've seen them too. Not sure how that adds to the "amusement" any more than Quinto going from TV to movies does.

It's the genre most likely. I haven't seen Heroes but I know Quinto was in it.

Chris Pine played Neo Nazi in the film Smokin Aces. I thought it was funny he was playing Kirk and he did an awesome job.

Zoe Saldana played a lesbian in the film After Sex with Mila Kunis. She was also Netyri in Avatar. Zoe really brought Uhura into the 21st century with her portrayal.

Karl Urban was a Rider of Rohan when he played Eomer in the LOTR. His Bones was spot on.

Simon Pegg has done does primarily comedies and he brought that in to Trek 09. But he didn't make a joke out of the role of Scotty.

Ive only seen Yelchin in Alpha Dog, so i can't comment fully on his Checov. To me it seemed like they recreated Wesley Crusher for this TOS reboot though. But I was happy that actually gave him something to do in the film. He just wasnt sitting at his post the whole movie.
