Why the Prime Universe makes sense for new Trek series

No one who understood what the term meant ever referred to Batman Begins as a remake.

Well, that was just one of the latest buzzwords.

Remake was one of the latest buzzwords in 2005? No. As a noun, it dates from 1936 (or before). It had a well-established meaning in 2005, "one that is remade; especially : a new version of a motion picture," which is why I said what I said.

I know why you said what you said. I wasn't disagreeing. It doesn't matter when a term originates, a buzzword can come about much later, as is obviously the case with "reboot." Buzzwords are often co-opted language that makes the original word lose its meaning, and thus are used "wrongly." I'm sure people called Batman Begins both a prequel and a sequel as well.

I called it a prequel, mainly because if you got really drunk and then squinted you could make it loosely fit with Tim Burtons original Batman movie.

Also I was around 14, and stopped calling it that when TDK came out.

It was definitely a sequel, in the sense it was a Batman movie, even if it didn't continue the "story" of the previous films.

How about "reinterpretation"? Seems a bit less controversial than reboot and a bit less pretentious than reimagining.

^ He's somewhere lecturing on other topics that he doesn't actually have any academic credentials in.

I never thought "Batman Begins" could fit into the continuity of the Burton movies, since in Burton's "Batman," it was pretty clear that Bruce's parents were killed by the pre-Joker Joker, while "Batman Begins" used the character of Joe Chill from the comics.

I agree that TNG was a soft reboot of TOS; basically Star Trek re-imagined for the 1980s. Perhaps something similar could be done with ST17.
