I can't tell you how desperately I'm hoping that's a typo.
Sorry to tell you, but it's a true story.
It had better be a typo. Quite frankly, I find it offensive in this day and age (as would my godson and his family).
No judgment was rendered on my part. It just stood out to me. I'm perfectly willing to accept a correction, or even assume it was a mistake if Borg451 happens not to return here.
Back on topic: If I'm not mistaken, Nichols addresses her relationship with Roddenberry in her autobiography, does she not?
In addition, the Shatner-Nichols close encounter isn't the first televised interracial kiss. Sammy Davis Jr. smootched Nancy Sinatra on her variety show—and no, that's not a euphemism—a while before that.
Not to take anything away from Nichols, but I'd like to point out another groundbreaking series, one which aired three years before ST, and one which featured Cicely Tyson as a secretary and friend to series lead George C. Scott. "East Side/West Side" featured Scott as a New York social worker, and Tyson was really the first African American female to play a nonstereotypical character on TV. Sadly, it is all but forgotten today.
TV Land (or one of those networks) played an episode a few years back which I happened to see, and honestly, Tyson seemingly had as much dialogue and as substantive a role in this one episode as Nichols had during the entire three year run of ST.

The Kirk/Uhura kiss is notable because it was deliberately scripted. Variety shows, on live TV, were more spontaneous. Sammy Davis, Jr. also kissed Carroll O'Connor (as Archie Bunker) in All in the Family in the early 70's (he was quite the strumpet, clearly), but that was qualitatively different from, say Ellen DeGeneres' groundbreaking episode on her sitcom. The TOS kiss was kind of a shot across the bow for censors.
I understand that, and wasn't attempting to devalue the Kirk/Uhura kiss, but rather to clarify that it's not quite as is customarily advertised.
Certainly both occurrences were steps forward.

OK, in that case, warning for trolling. I have no idea why you want to refer to black people as "blackos", but it is completely inappropriate.
Since Martin Luther King, Jr. got down on his knees and begged Nichelle to stay on Star Trek (or something like that), I think she should get all the credit.
I bet that story got exaggerated with every telling. I'm not sure if MLK was making just and off-hand comment or something that turned into the legend of him walking 100 miles barefoot to beg Nichols to not quit Star Trek.
