(As a U.S. driver) I learned it as the two second rule. Figure out how much distance is driven (at your current speed) in two seconds, and that's the minimum gap needed between yourself and the car in front of you. Alternatively, slow down (to produce more of a gap) if it takes less than two seconds to reach the part of the road the car in front of you had reached two seconds prior.
.
If you're doing 85 it's a higher fine than that (up to thousands depending on your salary) and 3 points on your license.
I like sitting in the middle lane. Slow lane is for trucks and fast lane is for angry men in Audis.
As a UK driver, I was taught the rhyme "only a fool breaks the two second rule; in the rain say it again," if said in a monotone voice each line takes two seconds to recite, to save any calculations and allowing for different speeds.

However, my pet peeve is people who travel on ordinary roads at 40-45mph whatever the speed limit - even in towns. They're a fscking menace.
The 40mph club, you're right they are a real menace. I come across them reasonable often as the road I drive the most changes between 30mph/50mph/60mph and due to limited overtaking spots you'll find yourself stuck behind them as they dawdle along at 40mph in the 60mph zone and pull away from you in the 30mph zones.
