Why not better nods to other Star Trek shows

That's not to say that it can't please old fans, but the point I was trying to make was that they chose to put in "cute" references that people would laugh at even if they didn't get them or knew where they came from (aka new fans/non-fans) because it's a big popcorn summer movie.

Instead of putting something that is completely unfunny and makes no sense whatsoever to anyone who hasn't been a fan for years and owns every episode of every Trek show? :cardie: :wtf:

And that's a bad thing how? (if true)

I was going to say, it's a good thing that it wasn't necessary to understand the references to enjoy the story - and that the movie wasn't falling over with them. Even some of us long-term fans don't know every second of recorded Trek ( :alienblush: ;) )

I was just answering the OP. That's why I believe there aren't "better nods to other Star Trek shows".

If you include the sound FX and ship designs, there are more 'nods'. Quinto's "fascinating" was well-recieved when I saw it opening night.

I don't buy the argument that this film automatically displeased older, or TOS, fans. The reception opening night was very good, and yes, there was one insufferable grumbler, who sighed and moaned through the whole film.
Some fans decided they didn't like this film before they ever saw it, for them, suffering through it was the experience they wanted to have, and being a minority in solidarity about it gave them something to latch onto, seemingly proving them right in contrast to the "dumb masses" - mostly other Trek fans who didn't have a stick up their butt.

This is not to give STXI a pass on its flaws, and I too crave a deep, sci-fi story in Star Trek. I'm not sure if it can happen in mainstream film at all these days. TMP was probably as sci-fi as big-screen Trek will ever see.

besides, no one goes to a film to fill out a checklist of star trek esoterica. you wouldn't have time to watch the movie if you were keeping track of all the references!

I'm ashamed to admit it, but that was exactly what i did do! I'm very anal that way. And because i did that, i didn't enjoy the movie as much as i did the second and third time i saw it.

BUT i did love every little tidbit they gave us....

As far as what the OP was talking about (more alien species), was i the only person who thought it odd that an ORION be in Starfleet? I know you guys love her, but did it strike anyone else as odd?

Yes - kind of odd, although, geek that I am, I loved the reference.

Of course, being an Orion female, you gotta wonder: was she required to wear spray-on pheramone suppressant?? No wonder Uhura was tired of Gaila bringing guys back to the dorm room.:rommie:

I thought the filmmakers hit the sweet spot for style and number of TOS references: the nods they included were apt, witty, didn't slow down the momentum or distract from the story proper, could be understood by noobs within the context of the movie and were cool enough to be appreciated by fans. If you fall or trip over the references then that's too self-referential and just plain distracting.

I especially loved the visual and aural references...starting with the familiar sonar-sounding computer chirps that opened the movie in the prologue.

Yeah, thats what i was referring to, how it would be difficult for an Orion woman to be amongst all those red-blooded cadets and such.

And yeah, i totally got my geek on when we heard those chirps right up front!

I thought this film struck a good balance of nods to the original show and a few passing nods to the others. It was neither expected nor necessary to do that. Not every film has to be like "Roddenberry On Patrol." I would rather see a fun film than a lot of "inside" fannish references for its own sake.

We got Archer, his pet beagle(an indirect reference to our beloved Porthos)and I *think* there was a Xindi-Reptillian cadet in the crowds at Starfleet Academy in one scene. That's not much, but considering that in THIS timeline ENTERPRISE is about the only part of the old/Prime canon that will remain intact that seems...fair? Is that the word?:p

There was that one reptillian on the bridge of the NuEnterprise...she? gave Sulu that "look" when he couldnt get the ship to warp. I was wondering what species that person was....

The "bronze " lady - she was very cool looking. But I couldn't tell you what race she is - there was a nice little squib about her make-up in one of the trade mags that I read at B&N. But, alas, I've forgotten now what it said:confused:.

Name of her race may be over at trekmovie.com

I did see a couple more overtly "reptilian" looking cadets in the Star Fleet auditorium scenes, albeit in the background.

Actually Travis Mayweather was in the movie.

But, just like in Enterprise, he said nothing and did less, so no one noticed him.

And instead of the accident reference of the death of a 120 year old Beagle, there could have been an old T'Pol or ancient Mayweather or something...

I guess they wanted to throw in a "cute" reference that non-fans would laugh at even if they didn't have a clue who this "Archer" fellow was, because this is a big popcorn summer movie and they care about mass-appeal more than pleasing the real fans, sadly.

I hate when people make big budget movies that attempt to appeal to the masses. I wish they would have made the movie for real fans, so that this movie would have made Nemesis type money and obliterated any and all hope for any sequels or other Trek verhicles for the next 20 years.

Seriously, man, how can anyone bemoan the fact they're making a movie for the masses? Apart from some low-budget stuff and indies, isn't that the whole point of making movies?

Long-time fan here who enjoyed the movie, nitpicks and all. The homages were subtle and not fan-wank. Fan-wank were the ENT eps dealing with the smooth-foreheaded Klingons, and while clever, were convoluted and really unnecessary. Non-fan-wank were the Archer line, referring to Cardassians via a drink, and having Kirk's f**kbuddy be an Orion woman, nods to The Cage and Whom Gods Destroy. Subtle nods to the long-time fans, IMHO. -- RR

That's messed up. Too bad they didn't give Tyler Perry's character the name Mayweather! That might've made up for the dissing the character received in ENT. -- RR
