Why no USS Kelvin novel yet?

The Kelvin, regardless of size, also seemed to be an explorer, otherwise why would you need a ship of 800?

Why would the Enterprise need a crew of 430 when it could be run with a skeleton crew and an automation system? For that matter, why did Pike's E have a crew of 200 and change while the same ship had more than twice the complement under Kirk? There are lots of factors that could determine a ship's complement. The mission profile could be one, but there could be other considerations like the level of technology (more people might be needed to do a given task if it were less automated), the efficiency of the life support systems (I often speculated that Pike's E had fewer crew since it couldn't support as many), the duration of the mission (a given amount of non-renewable resources could support a larger crew if the mission were shorter), and so on.

I'd like to see a prequel book about the story of the U.S.S. Kelvin Salt Shaker. I can but dream of the adventures of it's tiny briny crew (Salt Vampire!) before it met its ultimate fate in a bar fight in Iowa.

Hmmmmmmm.......

"Dance, little Kelvinites. Dance!"

And if it was a colonization effort, the Kelvin would have been escorting several vessels.

Not necessarily.

They could have had a crew of 400 and been dropping 400 new colonists off at a colony. The ship was supposed to be heading back to Earth very soon, so that Winona could give birth to Jim in canonical Iowa.

what annoys me, is Robau was supposed to be a badass and (notwithstanding all the BS in the XI forum) he's so totally not.

if he were REALLY badass, when Nero called him and said he wanted to talk, Robau should've said, "You just came out of nowhere and shot up my ship with no provocation, fuck you pal!"

And Nero would have started firing again aka Ayel's "Your refusal to comply would be unfortunate"

^ All I can figure was at that point in time, they'd not yet given him the script page(s) depicting his ultimate fate

Hey at leat he didn't go out in one shot like that bitch Esteban or get his ship taken out by an obsolete relic like Riker did (and he was a REGULAR). Plus other guest captains would have craped themselves if they were in that situation at least Robau showed courage in the face of certain death.

But in the version we got, the "original Enterprise" was never even built. Instead, a different, bigger one was built in its place, and over a decade later. I don't see how blowing it up and replacing it would be worse than having it never exist at all.

And of course that's another reason this rumor about the Kelvin being originally intended to be April's Enterprise is very probably bogus. The Kelvin was destroyed when Jim Kirk was born, and that was over a decade before the Prime Enterprise is generally accepted to have been launched. Nothing about this claim makes sense.

But of course we have no idea when the original was launched. "Generally accepted" means nothing.

Especially when the "Generally accepted" was only noticable on a HDTV.

I think a Galaxy class starship probably has more than a few tricks that an Intrepid class could only dream of, if only because of the amount of available power.
Well, the Intrepid has a higher rated maximum speed as compared to the Galaxy, variable geometry nacelles, bioneural gelpacks allowing for faster computations, and the most impressive of all, the ability to land on a planetary surface. The Intrepid is a more advanced class of starship, and probably runs rings around the Galaxy at impulse speeds too.

Plus it seemed to do better than the Galaxy did against the Borg (and aparently in STO)
