Why no rock music in Star Trek?

Do you like Derek Flint because he's (probably) less sexist than Bond, or is it because he's more human and somewhat more well-rounded (with a lot of weird, interesting hobbies and a better physical makeup [the ability to go into a trance, then be awakened by his watch]) than Bond?
Yes. And also because of the humor.

And for the record, he doesn't just go into a trance; he has the ability to stop his own heart, and restart it, without ill effect.

Use of contemporary music in a TV show set in the future can date the show to the period is was produced in, which might make it harder to sell in the decades to come.

For an in-universe explanation - It's probably a) tastes of the captain and b) a lot of pop music has lyrics, which won't translate well AND match the music. Heck, the universal translator is probably designed not to translate songs, hence why a Klingon singing isn't translated... Or perhaps it has a good taste subroutine.

I guess that we have a different taste of music.
Personally I think that today's "rock" is just a watered-down copy of the real thing.
The complaint that the new generation's "rock", "country", etc, isn't as good or valid as the older one seems to be pretty much a constant. The one piece of truth that I do find in it this time around is that a lot more of the music seems to be computer generated, taking human artistry and emotion out of the creative process (or at the least, removing it a step by putting it rather dispassionately in the hands of the programmers who programmed the software that is making the music). But then again, we have people like Diane Warren (the writer of a veritable buttload of Top 10 hits for all sorts of artists, including the Enterprise theme, "Faith of the Heart") who says she writes her songs using a formula, anyway. So maybe the emotion the listener brings to the experience is the more important part?

I dunno. But I do feel there's too much that's synthetic in the charts these days. I like some of it - I'm not just a hater - but I do wish there was more variety and more artistry.
Pfff.. everyone knows that Klingons love death metal...
I've always thought they'd LOVE this - opera + death metal = Klingon porno soundtrack music. ;)

It's been there sporadically (First Contact, Trek 2009) but in general my take on it is that it being used will simply "date" Trek. Not sure why I believe that, it just kind of feels that way to me.

They could at least have listened to blues music. That's something that really goes on my nerves in TNG, their obsessionn with jazz and chamber music. Don't get me wrong, I like chamber music, I used to be an active player of classical music myself, but in TNG it just comes across as a wankfest of how cultured we are in the future. I also love Shakespeare, it's my favourite literature of all, but the TNG cast doing half-arsed Shakespeare plays for each other is insufferable.
