Why no Ro?

She was meant to be in DS9, but apparently Michelle Forbes didn't want to commit fully as a TV series regular at that point in her promising career. Hence the creation of Kira Nerys.

She's had an interesting career, Michelle Forbes. She seems to know exactly what she wants.

She played Ro Laren in The Next Generation just long enough to make an impression, but not long enough to get bored or typecast. She did it again in Homicide: Life on the Street as Dr. Julianna Cox, a role she chose to quit when nothing forced her to. She did the same kind of thing in The District, 24, Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica, Wonderland, etc... She's pretty much living the dream of every actress and actor.

Well...doesn't the question also include GUEST appearances...surely shecould have appeared in "THe Maquis", or some other episode...even if just to die, or at least some kind of update.

TNG had her as a person with great potential, but prior to Picard, seemed to have wasted it.

How come Ro Laren never appeared on DS9?

You what I'm wondering recast Ro? The actress who played Kira Nerys -which I cant remember now, could have just been Ro. The character pretty much acted like her. At first Im sure alot of fans may not have liked it at first but the character would have developed more with a better actress. I think with ST XI that might help when certain characters want to be used and the actor or actress doesnt want to contiune playing role

I really don't have anything against the idea of recasting a character per se, but boy am I glad they invented the character of Kira instead of making it Ro! It would have been a great loss to not have Kira as a part of the series, in my humble opinion.

Nana Visitor is her name, and no, she couldn’t have been Ro. Michelle Forbes made quite an impression. She owned that character. If Ro were portrayed by anybody else, she wouldn’t be Ro.

Even if the role could be recast, she couldn’t serve on DS9 after the events of “First Strike.” As far as the Federation is concerned, she’s a wanted criminal. She couldn’t have been the first officer, or any officer, on DS9. She could be a member of the Maquis and make occasional guest appearances. That’s what I would have liked to see. The fact that we never heard of her again after “First Strike” is a real disappointment to me.

That episode of DS9 aired before her final apearance on TNG PreEmptive Strike.
But she could have still guest stared as A maquis in an another episode. Maybe in one of those Eddington maguis episodes.

"Preemptive strike" takes place at roughly the same time as the end of DS9's season 2, so this would not have been a problem had they chosen to recast the role when DS9 began. I do agree however that recasting would be stupid.

I guess, but that would have meant no “Preemptive Strike,” and that would have sucked, because it was an outstanding episode. Easily one of my top 20.
