Why No Christma In Star Trek?

In addition to the Christmas scene in Generation, there was one Voyager "Q" episode in which the renegade Q seeking asylum aboard Janeway's ship tried to get away from Q (John de Lancie) and transformed Voyager into a Christmas tree ornament. I thought that was pretty clever. ;)

At once an in-joke and a veiled product placement for Hallmark.

However, we don't know whether that Christmas tree was in the series present (Christmas! Present! That's a joke, son!) or sometime in its past, which was why I didn't count it as evidence of Xmas in the Trek era.

And don't forget that one of Picard's biggest wishes was to spend Christmas with his family.

I think Christmas is alive and well back on Earth ;)

No way, you saw it! It's back to old victorian settings!

Things seem to be retro back on Earth

Nedersong, don't forget the General Trek forum exists for just such a question.

the victorian era was when the orgies became the raunchiest, and that christmas scene was set in france, they'd keep it all civil just to be contrary

Given that Picard came from traditionalist roots, the Christmas celebration seemed very fitting. I could see Robert Picard and the other members of his family possibly even being believers. As for Jean-Luc...I have my doubts whether Christmas was anything to him but family, feast, and presents.

Santa roots.

"Odin's horse carried the god around when, clad in a large cloak and hat, he set out to meet his people, dispensing rewards and punishments as they were due. There are clearly elements there suggesting that Odin was a precursor of the Farther Christmas-Santa Claus figure,

According to Phyllis Siefker, children would place their boots, filled with carrots, straw or sugar, near the chimney for Odin's flying horse, Sleipnir, to eat. Odin would then reward those children for their kindness by replacing Sleipnir's food with gifts or candy.

the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, describe Odin as riding an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir that could leap great distances, giving rise to comparisons to Santa Claus' reindeer.

Christmas (and other December holidays) are the background setting for my third SNW story "Bum Radish: Five Spins on a Turquoise Reindeer" (Volume VI).

Also, my first spec script for TNG was "And All Through the Ship", which took place at Christmastime, Earthwise, that is, and took a few outsiders' views of the holiday. (They didn't buy the script, but it got me ten years of pitching to TV Trek).

Who's to say really that Religion and religious holidays don't exist in ficticious future setting world, for all we know religion in it's many forms (and possibly more due to the introduction of alien cultures) do still exist on Earth in the 23rd and 24th century where people still go to church, abide by religious commandments and laws etc. Just because the 7-10 people we focus on during the run of each series don't make a mention of most of them or acknowledge them doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist. The average person in the background could, for all we know, be Jewish, Catholic, Protestant or whatever they may be but nobody really needs to know.

Sorry about the rant but it just seems that there's always a post on religion in Star Trek and almost all the time people start arguing about it. I just have to point out though that although I was raised Protestant and went to church with my parents I do not follow religion myself, just believe that it is there for a purpose.

Why was there no Christmas or Halloween or other holidays in Star Trek? Except for the Bajoran made up ones, of course. But why no human ones or other oens?

Christmas episodes where the cast gathers 'round a tree to sing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" to the audience are usually found in sitcoms.

So in hundreds of hours of television, there was one mention of christmas? It's hardly an avalanche.

Half the problem with Christmas trees in France is that since they found out they come from Germany, the French spend the whole season trying to surrender to the nearest tree...

OK, I'm sorry...
