Why No Christma In Star Trek?

Nedersong

Captain
Why was there no Christmas or Halloween or other holidays in Star Trek? Except for the Bajoran made up ones, of course. But why no human ones or other oens?

First of all, there was.
Secondly, Star Trek, like most science fiction of the mid-20th century, espoused the philosophy of humanism, which, to oversimplify, rejects religion.

'cause Gene Roddenberry thought religion was bullshit that mankind got over centuries ago (in star trek)

Hey don't shoot the messenger, i'm just relaying what he thought, been clearly documented.

Hey don't shoot the messenger, i'm just relaying what he thought, been clearly documented.

And I personally couldn't agree more with Roddenberry's thought.

There were mentions of holidays here and there (Christmas in GEN, the Hindu festival of lights in a TNG episode and so on)

But frankly, it is more interesting to see alien holidays (Klingon, Bajoren, etc). Why tune in to see Janeway and Co. look for easter eggs?

"If the crew has to eat meatloaf this Thanksgiving, at least make it look like turkey."
--Kirk to a random crewmember (probably from the galley), "Charlie X"

Didn't Kirk have some Helen Noel-related memory about a Christmas party?

Aye. I was just about to mention that...

I sense a transporter effect coming on as Scotty prepares to beam this one over to the General Trek forum where it more rightly belongs.. Goodbye misplaced thread.. Oh and tits.

Didn't Kirk have some Helen Noel-related memory about a Christmas party?

Yes, he and Lt. Noel met, danced, and flirted at a Christmas party, as established in "Dagger of the Mind." She later used the neural neutralizer to plant a memory that they'd gone beyond flirting and actually made love. A lot of people misremember this and assume that he and Noel had actually been involved.

So "Dagger" and Generations explicitly establish the ongoing existence of Christmas in the ST universe. There are also various Xmas references in Trek literature. Alan Dean Foster's novelization of the animated episode "The Survivor" began with a Christmas party, and there's a Christmas party toward the end of my own recent TNG novel Greater Than the Sum. DC Comics' 1988 TNG miniseries included an issue set at yet another Xmas party, involving an alien entity that spread good feeling and briefly took the form of Santa Claus.

In Alan Dean Foster's novelization of the animated episode "The Survivor", the crew is shown having a Christmas party in the opening scene. This does not appear in the original episode, however.

Err, apparently you have not seen TOS? And I believe there was at least one Xmas reference in TNG.

And what about that DS9 where Quark dressed up as Santa to get people to drink in his bar?

Here are some roots of the Christmas holiday. Perhaps it will have evolved even more by 24th century.

Yule celebrations at the winter solstice predate Christianity .The term has been linked to and may originate from the Old Norse Jōl, which refers to a Germanic pagan feast lasting 12 days that was later Christianized into Christmas.[4]

Scandinavian and Russian tales of North-pole dwelling wizards eventually gave us the modern supernatural being welcomed by all--Father Christmas alias Santa Claus.

Isn't this fodder for General Trek rather than Science-Fiction and Fantasy?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Well, that covers Christmas and Thanksgiving. Was Halloween or Easter ever mentioned?

Halloween was mentioned in Catspaw. It's the only time of year I watch that episode too.

Picard mentions Halloween in "The Big Goodbye" when he visits the holodeck. His secretary (in the Dixon Hill holonovel) sees Picard's uniform, laughs, and asks if it is not early for Halloween. Picard responds with "Halloween?" that suggests he has never heard of it.
