Why No Canucks on the TOS Bridge?

A.V.I.A.F.

Captain
I have always wished that Canada would have been represented on the TOS bridge. So many other countries/ethnicities were and that is great, but no Canadians.

I think it would have been nice to have a bridge officer from Toronto or Montreal, or even Vancouver.

Ensign Jean-Marie Mackenzie from New Brunswick would have been nice. He might have been overly apologetic every time he bumped into someone when the bridge got jostled about (sorry, eh). He might have been seen pouring heavy amounts of maple syrup on the brightly coloured spongy "food" that came out of the synthesizers and he probably might have been the only officer who could keep up with Scotty when it came to drinking!

What do you think?

P.S. I'm a Canuck so don't any of you other Canadians get all ticked off and hate on me for perpetuating stereotypes about us (besides doing so amuses our American overlords and keeps them underestimating us). :techman:

Shatner is Canadian, but his character is from Iowa. My point is it would have been nice to have had a crew-member who was explicitly Canadian on the show.

Maybe they could have had one of the red-shirts show up hungover wearing a Habs jersey and wondering why there was such an awkward silence on the bridge.

^^ Admittedly it would have been a funny moment to realize the NHL is still going in the 23rd century.

And Lt. Vincent DeSalle's nationality was never specified. He could have been Canadian. He said his ancestry was French, but it depends how far back you go. Perhaps his distant ancestry was from France yet his more immediate family history was from Quebec. Sure he didn't have a Quebecois accent, but neither do I and I'm French Canadian.

Actually Helen Noel could have been Canadian as well. :D

Perhaps in the 23rd century, Iowa is part of Southern Canada?

If not, there's always Rodney McKay.

Well, given that among the main characters there were three US Americans (Kirk, McCoy, Sulu; four if you count Spock), two Europeans, and one African, North America is already over-represented.

What about South America? Asia? (Sulu is Asian-American, but his Asian ancestry is never mentioned or considered). Oceania?

TOS is rightly praised for its inclusiveness, especially considering the time, but it has bigger problems than the lack of Canucks. ;)

Having Sulu born in San Francisco was something I disliked about TVH. The character's description in TMoST said he was of mixed Filipino-Japanese ancestry with the implicaton he was born in that region. Making him by birth an American (even if his parents were just visiting) goes against the intended international mix of the crew. Bad move.

Well, at least in STVI they gave him the complete name Hikaru Sulu. They could have called him John Henry Sulu, Jr. and be done with it. :D

I like that idea. I also like the idea of having Vulcans on our 5 dollar bill.

First time I have seen this, so cool!

By the time of the 23rd century Canada and the U.S. could have been merged into a larger North American union of some sort. Indeed I've heard of some folks speculating that that could conceivably happen sometime in this century.

^ Well, that wouldn't change much about the OP comment. It could be said that we never saw anybody from the former-Canadian provinces of North America, since Kirk was from the North American state of Iowa, McCoy allegedly from Georgia, and Sulu from California. (Not sure about Spock's mum, I'm not very good at recognizing American accents.)

I can see Canadian provinces joining the U.S., maybe after Quebec secedes from Canada.

Joining the US would probably prevent that from happening! I think the idea of a united N. America in the future is unlikely though.

I've seen it done before but not with the eye-shadow, and it is an offence to do the here.
There were no Canadians on the Next Generation either or DS9 & Voyager.

It never occurred for me to think of it that way, because of the melting pot effect that takes place before the 23rd century. Sulu was implied to be of Japanese descent in TOS. Whether he was born in Japan or the North American continent is really kind of irrelevant.

Kirk may have been born in Iowa, but we know enough about his life's history to be reasonably certain he never stayed in one place for too long. Even if you discount the 2009 movie, Kirk's migrant past is definitely there. Take "The Conscience of the King", for example. Kirk must've been on Tarsus IV in his teens during the Kodos disaster.

The 2009 movie has him born off-world, which seems clearly incompatible with the prime universe. But the 2009 movie does reinforce the notion of Kirk as a migratory soul.

So, why couldn't Kirk have been born in one place (Iowa? offworld?), spent part of his youth in another (Montreal?), and then later on moved to another place (maybe back to Iowa?), and then spent his teens teens offworld (Tarsus) before returning to Starfleet Academy?

Do you mean it is an offence to deface legal tender? Or, an offence to post this image? I just got this off of the net, someone else defaced these bills. I can't afford to risk defacing cash; I need all the 5 dollar bills I can get!
