Why isn't there a Chief of Security on the Enterprise in the Kelvin Timeline?

Not Giotto, who only made that one appearance (replacement rate for Chiefs of Security no doubt is nothing short of horrendous!), but there was a guy calling himself Security Chief in "Tomorrow is Yesterday". It probably follows that all the redshirts with more braid on their sleeve than just one stripe are potential Security Chiefs in the TOS era, even though they seldom get lines.

In counterpoint, "Mirror, Mirror" has Sulu as the Security Chief, and our Scotty has this to say about it:

Scotty: "Mr Sulu is 'Security Chief', like the ancient Gestapo."

A weird comment unless we assume the title really did go away for a couple of centuries after WWII, and the guy from "Tomorrow is Yesterday" was a neo-Nazi who liked to intimidate his colleagues with his Gestapo title and matching leather outfit.

Of course there was a chief of security in TOS. If there is a security department, it only makes sense that it would have a department head. Otherwise you'd have the redshirts running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off because there's nobody to assign their duties, schedule their shifts, etc.

Dennis is correct. The Enterprise probably had a security chief. TOS did not.

In fact, I'd argue that Odo was really the only proper security chief shown on Trek. Chekov/Work/Tuvok/Reed were tactical officers. But, for whatever reason, security was included in their operations/duty mandate. (Which really never made a lot of sense to me.)

Umm, what? TOS did have a Security Chief. There's no question about that. See above.

It's just that we never saw the guy by that explicit title on screen. Probably a bit of a hermit.

Until we see otherwise in my own head canon Cupcake is the Chief of Security, and if he wasn't then its likely the individual who was got killed along with a vast number of the security department (which included Cupcake according to information on a deleted scene, but apparently he will be back for Trek 4) so he is now!

I can just imagine while everyone else is in the mess hall or the lounge for the Christmas party, the security chief is probably alone getting drunk in his quarters over the fact that once again his department had the most fatalities for the year.

And for the slow of reading, "Security Chief" was also part of the onscreen dialogue of "Tomorrow is Yesterday".
