Why isn't there a Chief of Security on the Enterprise in the Kelvin Timeline?

Back when it was just TOS and none of the rest had come along yet, I thought Scotty doubled as Security Chief and that the security staff amounted less to an actual duty assignment as just something that members of the Engineering staff were sometimes called upon to do.

Rather than have a Chief of Security on the Bridge, you'd expect there to be a room or department with a nearby armoury, and a wall of displays showing ship security footage

That'd probably be the most realistic option, but then you'd have to build a set for it, and pay actors to fill it. They probably didn't want to go through all that trouble back then.

He's dead.

Jim.

Just pick some random redshirt on the bridge and make him your head canon Chief of Security.

Maybe it was Heather Langenkamp's alien in STiD?
Works for me.

I doubt Moto was the security chief. That's a high level, senior officer's position, not suitable for simply standing watch in the brig.

An empty brig at that. Though, truth be told, all senior officers in Star Trek are often seen doing jobs their subordinates should be doing. I guess Starfleet doesn't approve of the "leaders don't work, they lead" mentality that rules any job setting today?

You gotta put your time in at the desk just like the grunts.

Of course, one has to wonder why does there need to be anyone guarding the brig when it's empty? Hell, why is the door even locked when it's empty?

Aren't empty cells always locked?
Are they? That seems silly. Even sillier, I've been doing a lot of re-watches here lately, and I've been noticing empty brigs in the 24th century shows have their force field active. Which for them seems impractical, that's using power which doesn't need to be used.

They run holodecks all day. I don't think they care.

You would think so wouldn't you? Even shopping malls, condos, and casinos have security rooms like this. But when aliens beam onto the bridge of a Starfleet ship, it's pretty much over. Doesn't matter if it's the Enterprise, Defiant or Voyager. There is nobody in a security room watching a security camera on the bridge and going "Holy shit! Intruders on the bridge! Security to deck 1!". Nope, nobody ever comes to rescue the bridge crew.

When has there been a bridge intrusion that could have been resolved by Security "coming to the rescue"? The typical scenario has aliens taking over the whole ship, or kidnapping an individual. In the former case, Security has its hands full and wouldn't accomplish anything anyway by sending more troops to the bridge than they usually do. In the latter, it's better to be punching commands into consoles belowdecks to get the shields back up, or reconfigured to better resist beam-out, than to wave a phaser at the kidnapper and the victim.

No doubt there is an officer somewhere going "Holy shit! Intruders on the bridge again!" every time something like this happens. Doesn't mean this would make him any more capable of releasing stun gas or dispatching manpower to the scene - it's tactical concerns that stop him from doing so in general. I.e. if the enemy can get to the bridge, that's the definition of a powerful enemy, and failing to make him Security-proof would undermine the plot.

I think from TNG onward, the Tactical officer doubled up as head of security. But when for example, Tuvok calls for "Security to the Bridge" - those security officers need to be somewhere waiting.
