Why is Trek DVD packaging so awkward?

Wow, after reading this thread I'm not so sure I want to start getting Trek series. The only one I have is the Animated series, and I personally that that was weirdest way of pakaging a DVD set I've ever seen, with the DVDs in the little flip book thing inside the big plastic box.

I think the packaging is just plain stupid. They break easily, they are not a standard size so they don't fit as well on the DVD shelf and they break within a week of having them. I usually just put them in regular cases and dump the rest.

I have that too, the TOS remastered series (not TOS-R) come in the same sort of box, a big plastic shell with a book of discs inside.

Shame that, the region 2 special edition movies are nicely packaged. With the exception of TMP, they all come in a silver box with a nice bit of art on the front and a plain old DVD box inside with two discs.

If the TOS episodes were inside a replica tricorder, I'd dig the strange packaging for the sake of the look of the thing, but they're just plain awkward for no apparent reason.

...and taking out the discs makes watching the DVDs more of an event.

And by "event", I assume you mean as in "circus event" where you're juggling the case around while trying to get the discs out; doing a job requiring 3-4 hands with only 2. :)

I use this marvelous invention called the floor to aid me in opening the cases. I've got plenty of room to fold out the TNG packs or stack various bits of casing. It just takes a little more time and care to remove the discs. I've never had a problem with anything breaking or falling apart.

I see.

The shelves I didnt' post previously (because none of the Trek DVDs were on them when those pics were taken in 2005) are the BILLY shelves from IKEA -- also perfectly suited for regular AND Trek DVD sets. This shelve is marketed as "standard" for CDs and DVDs and as such was why I disputed your claim that the Trek DVD packaging doesn't fit on "standard" DVD shelves.

Here's the rest of my collection back then:

Now those are some nice shelves!

So where would the TOS and ENT sets fit? Could you remove those dividers just below the half-way point and put them on the top shelves in the lower half of the unit then?

Cus they won't fit in the regular sized holes there....

Great shelves though!

Spoken like an individual who does not own dogs who, by instinct, participate fully in ALL activities which occur on the floor.

Thanks. I'm kind of bummed I left them with my parents in DC. Mom uses them as part of her pantry now. :(

As for the Enterprise DVD sets ... yeah, either they go on the top shelf or under the middle shelf. All the other shelves in each unit (I had six shelves there) are adjustable except the middle shelf, held in place for stability.

Like the OP, I just put all my Trek DVDs in nice cases and throw the packaging in the garbage where it belongs. Saves an enormous amount of shelf space. :)

Do they still make those shelves?

Seriously.

I could use some of those!

Not to mention the shedding. Any time anything touches my floors it gets coated in dog hair.

What about substituting a countertop or table for the floor? It won't work for cats, but it should work for most dogs.

Works for me. When I open my Lost DVDs I just clear a space on the coffee table and use that. I realize now I probably should have mentioned that in my last post. :brickwall:

I don't know that I could ever throw out the packaging. I paid so much freaking money for those dvds I don't want to throw anything out.

Yes. Except, I misremembered the name of the shelves in my previous post. I have BILLY shelves now (for books and DVDs) but the ones I referenced earlier -- the ones in the picture-- are the BENNO shelves.

They're also about $10-15 cheaper online than what I paid for them back in 2005.

Great thread. I've always been happy with the packaging as is. But as Ziz pointed out a few posts back, there are alternative custom DVD covers out there.

The cost in inkjet cartridges can soon mount up though! So much so that somebody gave up and listed theirs for sale on eBay, from the looks of these pics I saved.

Those covers look great, for when I own the entire run of series of course :)

The old VHS tapes I have had a nice spine to them, it spelled out a quote from Spock, "We are the first to reach this far" or some such thing.

Yeah I have nearly a 100 of the DS9 VHS tapes (too bad they didn't finish distributing them on VHS)....loved the covers on them.
