Why is the music in star trek only classically.

Well regarding the theme music for TMP/TNG, DS9 and VOY they seemed to be going for a majestic feel. It would be hard trying to do that with bluegrass or soul or jazz.

Imagine the Voyager title credits with fast pickin' banjo bluegrass.

Do you think Trek fans would appreciate the Enterprise theme more if it hadn't had the stigma of being attached to Patch Adams?

I don't think that had anything to do with it. This is probably the third time since Enterprise first premiered nine years ago that I have heard anyone mention that song was on the Patch Adams soundtrack. People just didn't like the song.

The theme music for TOS wasn't really classical--it had a definite Latin jazz feel towards the end, with the bongos. It's definitely more dynamic than the later themes.

They could have done worse for ENT--try watching the opening with "Yackety Sax" playing. Really, try it. I'll wait.

I mean all the music you see is classical.
I wonder how come there is no country, rock, etc.
I mean I can see the more violent music being taken away but, music is a humans relaxation tool among other things.

Taken away?? Do you really think musical forms would be banned in the Federation or even that lyrics would be censored? Sounds like a police state...now, I don't think it's impossible that the Federation HAS taken away freedoms, and there's an argument that they did, but was that your intention to imply it?

I don't think you're automatically a lout if you like other music...

This has been mentioned in other threads, but one inspiration for Alexander Courage's main Trek theme was “Beyond the Blue Horizon.”

It's also reminscent of Cole Porter's “Begin the Beguine.”

Hmmm. . .
When they begin the beguine
Out where the women are green . . .

You beat me to it. :) “Yakkety Sax” makes anything funny.

Nor are you automatically gay if you like opera!

An orchestra is the broadest tonal pallette to work from, so it makes sense to pull from those colors for Trek. It's also a dramatic match in most cases.
However, not all music with an orchestra is "classical", just as not all music with an acoustic guitar is "country". I could hardly call TOS music classical. Even for the 60's its quite modern, in fact TOS music might be more modern than the later shows.
And of course as others have mentioned, Trek is full of folk references - the most popular tune from TNG was a folk tune - and there is a good bit of jazz.
Avoiding pop/rock tends to be a good idea for the genre -

How many of you listen to music from middle ages? Today's music is garbage compared to classics. I think 24th century music will be similar to classics, hence why they listen to classical - they are used to it.

It was a combination of not wanting to unnecessarily date themselves and royalties for real music. It semi-backfired that some folks think the TNG+ crowd are snobs for listening only to that stuff (though there was some Folk music and Jazz in there).

All I know is, the Beatles will bloody well still be around in the 24th Century.

^^ Beatles songs are already considered “old standards” today. By the 24th century, the Beatles will be classical music!

We listen to what survives. That is what classical music is. It's only a small percentage of what would've actually been written and performed. There were a lot of hacks back then too. There will be good work from modern times that survives into the future, too, whereas the bad will be forgotten.

The various forms of music we listen to today are often the product of various other forms and styles of music from various cultures and from combinations of some of these cultures. If in the 24th century we really will have discovered new worlds and races of beings, then chances are the the hip music of the time will be influenced not only by musical styles from Earth that have survived due to their timelessness, but also from those of these other worlds as well. I think that Trek (particularly TOS) tried to show that by using tracks that hinted to classical music but with weird fills and such.

^^ “Greensleeves” probably dates from Elizabethan times. Not the Middle Ages, but still pretty damn old.
