Why is Star Trek Your Favorite Hobby?

It has action, romance, social commentary, exploration, character development, plot, new technology and lots of freedom to write about whatever you want.

I really don't know? It just clicks for me. But a lot of reasons I could give exist in other franchises.

I would guess it comes down to three elements... Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise.

Storytelling, characters, adventures, positive outlook for the future (that sadly, seems won't come to pass).

As a hobby, the collectable merchandise: the books (novel and reference), replicas of hardware, sets, ships, etc. Eight-by-tens, posters (movie and TV and collage), playsets, dioramas, figures (action or posed).

And just the good feeling Star Trek gives me, even if I'm having "the best of times ... the worst of times".

Message, Spock?

I'm not sure it's accurate to say that Star Trek is my favorite hobby. It's responsible for catalyzing my interest in other favorite hobbies. But is it my favorite in itself?

It's been years since I could actually sit down and watch a whole series that I enjoyed (Voyager just came to Netflix Canada, so I can rewatch it, yay! - but no "Threshold"). I don't own any Star Trek DVDs. I've severely cut back on buying the novels; unless I'm replacing or completing novels/novel sets I already owned that were lost/damaged in one of my many moves during the past 7 years, there are only two pro authors whose novels I'm still buying. I finally realized that I don't have room for everything, and certainly don't have the budget for everything. So I had to make some decisions on which aspects of Star Trek will not be part of my life.

I used to go to SF conventions in which the GoH was an author. Sometimes those turned out to be Star Trek novelists, and I've had the pleasure of meeting several of them. The last one was over 20 years ago, however.

Considering that there are significant parts of my life that I'd never have done without being prompted in part by something to do with Star Trek, I'd have to say it's my most influential hobby. Without Star Trek, I wouldn't have spent a dozen years working backstage in the theatre, or a similar number of years in the Society for Creative Anachronism, and there are many, many people I would not have met, either in RL or online.

My interest in Star Trek itself waxes and wanes. But its influence on my life has been constant for over 40 years.

It's not really a hobby necessarily, nor is it my favorite thing. I was raised with it, that was one of the very few shows on TV in the 60's and 70's that was interesting. They pushed the boundaries of story telling the same way Twilight Zone did. Especially back then, any show that made you think was a good show.

The optimistic future. To boldly go where no man... stories in episodes and films. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, crew, production designs, Enterprise and future technology.

Star Trek is more like a religion in some ways.

Guess I really like it's enlightenment values, and they clicked with me at an early age, shaping my outlook.

Star Trek like other spacey adventures, Futurama for example, don't have the restrictions like Bold & Beautiful and other meaningless junk, they can do almost anything.

As a creative guy, I think I like the creative spectacle of the franchise in all its myriad ways.

I started watching it as a kid, so I think I like the appeal of it suggesting the future - where I/we'd be going.

I think it makes more sense than the crap we're constantly having to deal with, so I think, like all art, it's a good way to organize and analyze life around us.

All the little things to remember do for me what I imagine sports stats do for others.

...yeah, some broad thoughts on the question. It's all-around good stuff.

EDIT: Trek is a hobby, but I've been less into it for a while now. It raised me well.

Perhaps if I wrote fanfic or tried to craft my own props or, maybe, had a podcast, I would call Star Trek a hobby.

Star Trek is only an interest for me: I only consume episodes and movies and comment on them.

Music and board games are my hobbies. I play the mandolin, go to jams, learn music from sheets, transcribe tunes from recordings, and sometimes teach people. I play games with friends and family, paint miniatures and game pieces, craft print and play games, and sometime attempt to create card games.

My level of active participation determines whether it is a hobby or not.

For me it's good folks doing good things for the right reasons.

amen.
When you are grown up with the TNG, Voyager etc you received the best moral attitude possible. You will do goods things just for the reason that it is good. It is a good feeling at the end of a episode, you see how good things happens when you behave brave, honest and ideal.
Andd when i remember Star Trek there will always be this great feeling.
Man, I can hardly wait for Star Trek Beyond. Yeah, only one week waiting.

All these things I agree with, however, the direction of the Star Trek universe is that it is going for somewhat dark, maybe not dystopian themes. What do you guys think of that? The world is a horrible place now, here comes World War III that the show has been talking about!!! :barf:

Who is "GoH?"
