Why is Star trek nerdy but Star wars Cool?

Star Wars has always been skewed to a younger demographic. In most parts of the world, DS9, VOY and ENT aired in late night timeslots, so didn't usually get to play to family groups in early evening prime time syndication, like repeats of TOS and first-run TNG did.

Certainly in the mid 70s, ST wasn't nerdy, it was hot! And there was a movie coming.

If That '70s Show is anything to go by, Eric was constantly mocked for being obsessed with Star Wars.

I didn't watch it religiously but I only remember Red being the one mocking Eric about Star Wars and other stuff as well. That was just the way he treated him with the "dumbass" and all?

Star Trek is generally more cerebral while Star Wars are all space fights and lightsabers..., action scenes.

Star Trek is good. Star Wars is evil.

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

These were the first Google image I came up with when I searched for "Star Trek Fan"

and then "Star Wars Fan"

Exhibit A; a social retard who thinks a Star Trek costume is a real military uniform should be work to an impeachment trial.
Exhibit B; A man at a Star Wars convention having a good time.

Because in Star Wars nobody has ever said "We can remodulate the deflector dish to send out a phased modular pulse that should be able to open enough of a hole in subspace that we use to beam Harry out with a skeletal lock."

Star Trek was cool in the 70s, and perhaps again in the 90s, but Star Wars is probably more universally accepted. It slants more towards action, which appeals to bigger demographics, whereas Star Trek has always leant more towards science fiction (later traded in for technobabble), which pigeon-holes itself a bit. Both franchises do come with there own set of hardcore nerdy fans though, so there's a lot of overlapping. It's all relative.

You're just biased because Star Wars has yet another superpowerful hero named Ben.

I think that the reason being is that Star Wars is mainly about the Empire v the rebels and is more about fighting than anything else.

Star Trek on the other hand does not have fighting in every single episode but instead sends messages to the viewer such as mortal enemies can become friends (Klingons) and that even when the chips are down you can still come out on top (Kirk v Kahn & The Borg etc)

So does Star Trek. And Star Trek's GodBen was cooler because he was black and not some English guy.

Star Wars is certainly more mainstream and is considered less nerdy by many. It seems like people can classify two kinds of star wars fans, the normal, movie goer and the crazy radical dude.

But to many people there are only one kind of star trek fan. But a little education from spending time on this board makes one realize that only a segment of star trek fans are crazy and obsessed canon-weirdos. ;)

IMO Star Trek is SCIENCE fiction, Star Wars is science FANTASY, and I am a fan of both. Looking way ahead to the 24th century, I can believe that Trek represents a more belivable future, than Star Wars does, even though SW takes in a Galaxy far away and far in the past...

Mostly Red but other characters mocked him about it at least once each over the course of the series.

In one episode, they take turns making fun of Eric's future might be like. First Fez imagines Eric going to a Star Trek convention with Donna, then someone else imagines Eric going to a Star Wars convention with Donna as Leah, then, finally, Hyde imagines Eric going to a Star Wars convention with his mother.

I thought Skiffy was primarily about possibilities. Since the 'science' elements of both ST and SW are impossible, both of them are fantasy in that respect.

I agree with the action v. talk thing.

Star Wars is basically a war movie set in space; whereas Star Trek is just plain... set in space.

Actually, it's kinda like LOTR set in space.

Oh, and to go all scholarly on you guys- Star Wars follows(almost exactly) the Hero's Journey, and contains several archetypes that can be found in practically any fantasy adventure story, from the Odyssey to the Little Mermaid to LOTR. George Lucas actually started imagining Star Wars after studying the Hero's Journey(I'm pretty sure in regards to Sociology) in a book by Jospeh Campbell.

Infact, you can interchange the names of Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter in a basic plot summary and they're the exact same story =)
>> see it here

That's why Star Wars is so popular- it's because it's a monomyth. It follows the same plot as hundreds of other stories.

Star Trek, on the other hand, while containing elements of the hero's Journey and also some basic archetypes(eg. Spock, Data, Tuvok are all the same), is way more extensive and complicated. Atleast when speaking in context of all the series & movies, it is. TOS by itself is still very detailed, though. Its heroes, archetypes, and plotlines are varied, which doesn't register with most people. Star Wars appeals to a wider audience because of its universiality.

In continuing that point- SW focuses on the Force(and its immediate themes), while ST explores a bunch of different issues(death, suicide, relationships, invasion of privacy to name a few), philosophies(existentialism is big one- alien cultures are used to explore others, like epicureanism or stoicism), and ideas(like religion).

Basically, ST has more themes than SW. But! I will commend Star Wars for its exploration of one very deep thought- how easy it is to fall (go to the Dark Side), and the problem of fear in regards to that. This alone is probably why so many people can so easily identify with Star Wars, because it speaks to our awareness of human fraility and maybe explains why some people can be so evil. It's all about choice.

Star Trek attempts to explore this, but not as well and succintly as Star Wars.

oh, and the technobabble thing. That serves to deter plenty of people XD

I think in a way, actually, it's not absolutely correct to compare the two - although both are film, one is exclusively movies, and the other is focused in episodes. They are in two different realms of storytelling -just like a novel is different from a comic book, even though they're both print.

They're just different, with different aspects, different accomplishments, different everything.

and there's my 2 cents =)

(edit: although, after seeing btflash's avatar [kirk=lone ranger, spock= Tanto], I can see how ST also has its parallels to other stories.. but I still hold my position that ST's archetypes are less pronounced than SW.)

As a fan of both, I know that as a child, I faced equal discrimintation and taunting from those around me.

I face much less "discrimination" for liking star wars. If I told a group of my friends, hey let's watch a star wars movie, I might get a couple of mild groans, but no real problems. If I told them hey let's watch a star trek movie, they laugh....

I know this from personal experience... haha
