Why is Smoking bad, but Smoking Marijuana is COOL?

I really have no idea why anyone would do either one. I mean, maybe once they start they'd want to keep going.....I just don't understand what would prompt someone to try either in the first place.

I mean, you've holding something and it catches fire. The natural inclination is to drop it before your fingers get burned. But someone, sometime, had the brilliant idea to put it in their mouth instead. And from this we get an entire sub-culture?

Curiosity. People don't get addicted to cigarettes and get high because it feels terrible. People see something in it, and those who have never tried it are curious about what those positive effects may be.

Well, smoking is addictive. Marijuana is not. That's why the first isn't cool and the other one is.

And, that's why I've been smoking for 13 years now. I still love it.

The Dagman, where have you been? There are countless studies relating marijuana use to mental illness: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2006/feb/19/drugsandalcohol.drugs

The people mentioned in that article sound as though they could have just as easily become addicted to alcohol instead of marijuana. Neither is really addictive or dangerous consumed safely and in moderation, but can become out of control for certain people. Though I'd say it's arguably much better to become dependent on dope than booze.

I find that VERY hard to belive!:vulcan:

It's nothing to believe or not believe; it's simple, proven fact. The working substance in Marijuana is not chemically addictive. Though users have reported withdrawal symptoms, these are psychological in nature only. A large percentage of those same users have a genetic predisposition towards being psychologically addicted; whether it be to smoking pot, playing the casino, masturbating or eating spaghetti.

No one is the entire history of this planet has ever died from smoking marijuana. EVER.

What that "article" and "study" fails to account for is the amount that is smoked. Cigarette smokers on average smoke a couple of packs a day, around 40 cigarettes. No pot smoker, not even the most abusive, will come anywhere close to smoking that many joints to their head in a single day. Let alone do it day after day after day as cigarette smokers do. It is that constant repetition on a daily basis that makes you more likely to develop cancer. You get more carcinogens from car and truck exhaust sitting in traffic than you will ever get from smoking pot.

And, BTW, there are ZERO teenagers sitting in mental wards because of pot. Now, something else may have landed them there, and they may have also smoked pot. But it wasn't pot that put them there. Saying it is is just a cheap out without looking for the true cause of their illness, and they will likely never be cured because the true problem never gets addressed. What, did you just watch Reefer Madness and take it as gospel? :guffaw:

PREACH!

You could say the same thing about World of Warcraft, but I'm in no hurry to destroy what little social life I have by installing it!

The only problem with weed is that I tear apart the house looking for snacks. After I come down that's the only shame I feel.

Nah, it would be too much effort.

Now I could see a drunk person wanting to do that

What about if they were on both? Just for good measure...

Posted at the same time as JW! Great minds... :p
