Why is Gotham such a crap hole?

I mean it's literally the worst place in the DC universe to live and, yet, it seems quite a great deal of people live there. The streets seemed filled with sociopaths only one of which is actually doing any "good." And the one place in the city where those sociopaths are held completely fails at its one function.

Arkham. A place so terrible at functioning it doesn't have revolving door policy with inmates it has an open door policy.

Come on, Batman, I think you need to up your game a tiny bit.

From a dramatic standpoint, it's arguable that the character of Batman couldn't work in a city where everything functions the way it's supposed to. If police and government were honest, industrialists cared about their community and average citizens took pride in their neighborhoods, what would there be for Batman to do?

Same thing the heroes who live in functional cities do.

Or, become an international crimefighter. Course, this would be hard if he wanted to maintain Bruce Wayne.

A bunch of Batmen around the world pretty much means Bruce can live anywhere without raising suspicions. And previous to INC., by joining the JLA, which fights global threats, he had already gained international scope.

Which was something he did a regular basis until about 30 or so years ago.

There have been fans that have suggested that Bruce's announcement regarding Batman, Inc. only fuels more rumours not quells. This was deal with in an amusing way in the first arc of Batman, Inc. Let's just say that Bruce infiltrates discussion boards.:guffaw:

Well, there'll always be crime. Stopping that is impossible. There'll always be punks on the street selling smack and criminal overlords organizing crime and manipulating local unions. There'd always be crime for Batman to handle, doesn't mean Gotham couldn't also be a lot more safe and less of a shithole filled with dangerous sociopaths with delusions of grandeur.

I think a city filled with Tony Sopranos would be infinitely better that a city filled with criminals like The Riddler, The Joker, Bane, etc.

And, really, why the citizens of Gotham continue to put-up with the corruption and the very existence of Arkham is baffling.

Yeah, but then you wouldn't have a comic. You'd have a guy in a bat suit doing the respectable cops jobs for them, which would eventually be boring. Like I said, from a dramatic standpoint, Gotham needs to be what it is for the character Batman to exist.

Of course it would, but you wouldn't need a Batman for a city filled with Tony Sopranos. Just the FBI and Lorraine Bracco. Batman (a costumed psychopath) exists to deal with the Joker, the Riddler, Bane, etc. (other costumed psychopaths) in ways a decent police force legally can't and ways a corrupt police force won't.

And, really, why the citizens of Gotham continue to put-up with the corruption and the very existence of Arkham is baffling.

Some words of perspective: The United States Congress.
