Why I saw Star Trek five times

I'm amazed it took you 3 or 4 viewings to notice the changing phaser colour, the women on the Kelvin is blown out into space, that the Kelvin only has one nacelle, that Kirk plays with a model ship in the bar, that Nero gets the red matter from Spock's ship etc...

Does it take you 5 viewings to understand basic plot premises in other films as well?

In know.. this is stupid.. i noticed all of that first time.. it isnt hard

how old are you OP?
is english your first language?
do you have any learning disabilities?
Oh, come on. There's a lot going on in the movie and different things will stand out at different times for different people. Someone who analyzes movies often may have worked out a more systematic approach, but the OP says, right up front:

I made a list of a a couple of the new things I noticed each time. What each person notices anew is different for each person of course, but everyone will notice some things.
That says all that needs to be said about the method used. It was just an exercise; no two people are ever going to pick up on exactly the same details in the same order without having been trained to do so.

The questions about the OP's age and primary language aren't really called for, and asking about learning difficulties is going a bit far, don't you think?

In another thread here about 2 days after its release someone claimed to have seen the movie 9 times. One of the first comments after was "my god man".

Yeah I don't get it either. I know it's Trek and everything...but I've given Paramount enough money over the years...

Because people enjoyed the film, and want to relive it and enjoy it lots of times? :wtf:

Do you only do things you like once and that's it?

I'm not saying that anything is wrong with it....but I just don't get why you'd want to spend buck after buck seeing it. Personally I'd rather just wait for the DVD and really get my money's worht.
I mean it's like me watching for example...Naked Time and Space Seed every week...nah couldn't do it...need to change it up...variety is the spice of life. ;)

For me, since I've had something of a break from work for the summer (after working myself nearly to death since Sept. 2008), it's been more of a matter of doing something I enjoy thoroughly. I've generally gone to morning shows (11 a.m.ish) because they are the cheapest shows. I lost my chance this morning, but I will probably go to a morning show again on Sunday. Each time, I notice more, or I get to focus more on particular details than before.

Plus, it's sort of like listening to music. If you like a song, do you only limit yourself to listening to it once?

I figure the choice is between watching Star Trek a few times and cleaning my house. The house loses.

I have always enjoyed re-watching something I love and would choose that over something new that is not as good any day. I have gotten so much out of each viewing.. and I'm always aware that the big screen experience will soon be gone forever.

Really it's not about going to the movies for me. It's about total immersion in 2 hours of rebooted Trek. There is a lot to take note of, a lot to compare, actors who offer nuances that don't leap out in the first viewing. I've gone back and watched TOS and TAS and then returned to the cinema and gotten even more out of it.

Oh and I never yet in 5 viewings noticed different colour phaser fire. I just don't notice that stuff because I'm not tech oriented.. I doubt I would have even noticed the blue nacelles if I hadn't read all about them here. I am busy looking at stuff like Uhura's earrings (see thread). So these posts of what people noticed are always interesting to me. Sneering at folks because you saw it first is just mean spirited. Not a pissing contest.

I just do it for pleasure. It's nice to get off planet with them. Have a nice visit.

I'll see it twice. And I see nothing twice. My viewing count for Star Wars: A New Hope is, like, 3. And I was around to see it in the '79 re-release. ;)

I just saw it for the 6th time this afternoon. I do believe I have finally had my fill of it for now, until the Blu-Ray arrives.

Wow, that's certainly a lot of thought put into your post, OP. :techman:

On this board, when I see a thread like "Why I saw Star Trek five times," I'd expect it to be from a hater who bashed the movie for months before it came out, then went to see it five times just to point out new things that are bad about it and how right he was to bash it for months on end.

I'm not sure why some folks are giving the original poster a hard time about seeing the film more than once.

I don't know about anyone else but I find myself watching episodes of certain tv shows and films more than once because they are so densely plotted and they dump a lot of information into my lap that the first viewing is just me trying to keep track of everything that I really don't get to sit back and just watch it. Also if a show has a large roster of characters and their storylines interconnect, as I watch the episode/film I'm busy trying to search my memory to remember who knows who or if they had earlier interactions or certain shared histories and because scenes are so rapid-fire these days jumping immediately from one to the next in the blink of an eye that sometimes while I'm thinking about that those things I might miss something in the next scene.

The second time I double check my facts and make sure I understood correctly what occurred. The second viewing also lets me listen to certain key dialog and exposition. I also look for subtle details and connections this go-around. It is also this viewing that I usually look for easter eggs and subtle visual elements.

The third time is usually the one where I've got everything straight in my head and understand the lay of the land and now I can really appreciate the film or episode in the context of the bigger picture.

So, in short, entertainment these days I dare say is intentionally designed to have a lot of layers and stuff one can't fully absorb in just one viewing. Just look at shows like Lost, BSG, Heroes, Fringe etc. I'd argue that it is done so you have to buy those DVDs so that you can go back and watch those earlier episodes, earlier scenes, and seemingly throwaway lines that take on a new context given subsequent revelations provided in later episodes. Essentially, I could watch a show like Lost season one and it be an entirely different viewing experience the second time I watch it after completing watching the first three seasons just as it would be a completely different viewing experience watching season one after having just viewed season five. There are far fewer than they used to be of the simple one hour one-shot episode or even the straightforward linear serial storyline. Shows like Lost or BSG have always seemed to me to have been borne out of the overly obsessiveness of many fans who are too focused on minutae.

Now I'm not suggesting XI is that complex but the same general attitude applies even if it isn't as complex.

More than once I've had friends/family comment on my re-watching DVD's or re-reading books. Either you repeat experiences you really enjoy, or you don't- another one of those binary things.:vulcan:

And a movie ticket is a heck of a lot cheaper than one of my trips to the malls. Shoes, and purses, and perfume oh my!

Since I've been six times, I guess it's pretty obvious which camp I'm in; but there are damn few movies I want to see even once- ESPECIALLY at the theater. I really wish I could have back the eternity that was "Benjamin Button". I just enjoy it as my current favorite bedtime story. Sure, it'll look good on my big screen TV, but it will never look as good as it does on the big screen, so I want to savor it while it lasts. Besides, it's been a very long time since I went gaga over a Trek film. It's like good food, music, or sex. I just enjoy the experience.

Only seen Trek XI the once, so far. May go see it again before it comes out on DVD.

It did seem very overwhelming with stuff to take in. I probably missed a whole ton of details.

Why I saw Star Trek five times
Why anyone would see a movie more then once or twice is beyond me, actually. That's probably why foreign numbers are so low; people don't go to the same movie week after week. :D

Hey, if you like the film enough and have the time and money for it, it sounds good for me. I'm one of those folks who enjoy seeing a good movie more than once. The first time has me following the plot along, but on the second viewing I start catching little touches and less obvious items.

With that said, the one movie I've seen the most times (13) in a theater is The Wrath of Khan, which was my all-time favorite and a local movie theater had Dollar Tuesdays). As for the current film, I've seen it three times, and will definitely go for a fourth viewing.

Noticing the changing phaser color is one thing; noticing precisely why Kirk switched to blue in the middle of a firefight, and then switched to red immediately after, is something else. I doubt most viewers would have picked up on how the phaser color change interacted with Kirk's later promise to Spock that he would cover him (i.e., to stun a Romulan for a mind-meld).

Not sure what you mean by "the women on the Kelvin is blown out into space." I am unable to parse your sentence.

The key issue in the question of where Nero obtained the red matter is why Spock Prime allowed the Jellyfish to be captured: why didn't it have self-destruct capabilities, (and why bring along enough to vaporize the Federation)?

It took me three viewings to begin questioning why after three years at the academy together that Kirk still didn't know Uhura's first name. And why does Spock refer to her as Lt. on at least two occasions while Pike adresses her as cadet?

Saw it for the 5th time on Thursday, only this tme in IMAX - WOW!! I did have to fly to London though to see it.

It was on my 2nd viewing that I noticed the phaser continuity error in the scene before Kirk confronts Nero on the Narada bridge.

Oh come on, is it really that hard to comprehend, it's basic common sense. He switches to a different colour, Spock mind melds with the romulan. It has nothing to do with covering him. Switch to blue, stun, mind meld. Simple as that. Anyone familiar with Star Trek should have figured out it was to stun the guy on first viewing.

Your original post, you mentioned only noticing someone (you thought it was a guy) blown out into space on your second or third viewing.

Slowpoke is slow?

Also, I noticed all this with my first viewing. What do I win? An intarwebs?
