Why I Love Enterprise

Everyone here's noted things that I also loved about the series (uniforms, the look and feel of the series, the various character arcs), but looking back on the series there's one more thing for me.

Whenever Enterprise went into combat, I actually had to worry. It wasn't like TNG where the Enterprise D was usually the most powerful vessel/used diplomacy to simmer down a crisis/had Q to bail them out ;). And while there were other situations where you knew the vessel was in trouble (U.S.S. Voyager facing off against the Borg, Defiant first engaging the Jem'Hadar for instance) from the moment Enterprise narrowly survived that early first season episode battle, I always thought, "Oh man, they could be in trouble!"

That all escalated with the Xindi crisis of course. I think it took me a few days to pick my jaw up off the ground after "Azati Prime".

Best parts of Enterprise:

-The special effects
-They fill in some blanks from the other series in clever ways
-The characters' heavy reliance on each other
-Archer's kick-ass attitude in season 3
-SO MUCH ACTION!!!!!

Well, most of the reasons I love ENT have already been mentioned and much more eloquent, but here goes:

1. Great friendships – For me, Enterprise is all about friendships. Reed & Tucker, Archer & T’Pol, Archer & Shran.

2. Naivety – It was great watching this inexperienced crew explore new worlds and cultures, and make mistakes.

3. Realism – I like how the characters feel the most real of all ST characters. In their free time they watch a game or a movie, and drink beer. They bicker. They screw things up. The captain slacking around in his sweatpants, talking to his dog. I bet he can’t recite Shakespeare by heart. I know I can’t. :p

4. All the winks to TOS.

5. The uniforms.

6. Porthos. Awww….

7. Shran’s antennae.

8. The sexy voices of DS9: Jeffrey Combs, Vaughn Armstrong, Casey Biggs and J.G. Hertzler.

9. Handsome men performing sweaty activities – I’m shallow, I know...

2. Naivety – It was great watching this inexperienced crew explore new worlds and cultures, and make mistakes.
I hated this. Too often it wasn't a lack of knowledge about aliens that hindered them, but a lack of basic common sense.

Heaven knows that I rolled my eyes more than once during the first two seasons, so yes I have to agree with you that the captain often showed a lack of commons sense. Still, the wonder and excitement and even the cluelessness of this crew made them feel more real to me than most of the VOY and TNG crew. I guess that one reason the writers wrote the characters like this was to create conflict between them. On the one hand you have a cautious Reed and T'Pol, on the other hand the impulsive Trip and Archer. I may not agree with these people, but watching them it isn't boring. And both Trip and Archer did change during the years (Not sure that Archer changed for the better though ;)).

The military realism of the ship itself as compared to the luxery liner USS Enterprise 1701D is one aspect I liked as Ali already mentioned other ones. I also remember reading about the difficulty they had to make the communicator look right for the series with all the modern cell phones that looked more high tech than the communicator Kirk used in TOS

The Andorians were awesome. I really like the way they looked, the way the Kumari looked, and the way they acted. ENT made their culture interesting. And of course, Shran was fantastic!

I liked the idea behind the cranky emotional Vulcans. Who would have thought the Vulcans as a group would ever be antagonists in Trek? That was a great idea, in my opinion. Somebody mentioned liking the way Archer was a flawed hero - in the same vein, the cranky Vulcans showed that the early beginnings of the Federation weren't as idealistic as one might think.

I didn't much care for the Tellarites by themselves, but any scene with Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites was awesome. It was great to see the three other founding members of the Federation from a different perspective - in that respect, Enterprise wasn't just about the human side of things. Again, characters like Shran and Soval made their respective races come alive.

The humor in Enterprise was also a high point for me. "The Andorian Mining Consortium runs from no one!"

The concept of the Xindi was also very interesting. I only wish we had been able to see a Xindi-Avian. I especially liked the Aquatics and Insectoids, and the Aquatic ships were amazing.

Side characters like Shran, Degra, Silik and Soval were actually more interesting to me than the regular crew most of the time, not that I disliked the crew (except for Archer at times). I thought Future Guy made a cool Big Bad, too.

And finally, any scenes with Trip and Hoshi together. Enterprise gave me my favorite 'ship.

I have read through most of this and I am sure that I will repeat a lot of what was said.

I LOVE Malcolm Reed, he is a very underrated character. He had a lot of guts. He was just like a lot of us with our insecurities, with our being uncomfortable being one on one with the captain (or whoever is in charge)

I love how the crew gets along, most Trek crews do, but I like there is a backstory with Trip and Archer, that we see the growing friendships of T'Pol and Archer, Malcolm and Trip and so on.

I like that even though he was not utilized much, Travis had a history. Where he came from, how he got to do what he wanted to do.
And to go with that, I like seeing Archer's relationship with Hernandez.

I like the newness of everything....Reed Alert, warp drive, how to fix a starship out in space, how to ask for help, first contact, universal translator, making alliances. Add to it that they were on their own and they managed to survive and make friends.

Shran, how can you hate him. The mean guy wannabe that had a heart of gold. He did the right thing even when he didn't want to.

I can also say that the whole cast is attractive. There is eye candy for everyone.

I kinda like that the ship is all human with the exception of T'Pol and Phlox.
And I like seeing T'Pols struggles, though she was Vulcan she was not perfect. And it was nice. Nice to see how mindmelds were considered taboo.

I also liked seeing the explanation of the Klingons appearance in TOS. Loved the Romulan arc. Loved the beginning of Section 31.

The ship was cool. The new aliens were cool. The ideas and storylines were a nice change. I liked how they used the Borg and Ferengi without saying who they were.

Shuttlepod One.

Alienesse said shirtless Trip and Archer, though I agree with that she forgot shirtless Malcolm :)

And I also liked how they got actors from TNG, VOY, DS9 involved in the series.

I like that too, but I wish they had done more with these storylines. Especially with Hernandez. She was an interesting and likeable character. I would have loved to have seen more of the first female captain. And not just as a romance opportunity for Archer.

They should have but as you said with her being a relationship with Archer, I also feel that they needed to fill a void for a captain for a ship and decided to go the female route. She would have been interesting, and her crew. Reading about them in the Destiny series of books. Too bad the show ended before we got a chance to explore the many left open doors.

I'm enjoying all this Reed love. He really is a very interesting character and very well portrayed.

Anyway you can all fight over the starfleet menz I will have this one:

Favorite ENT character :adore:

I couldn't agree more. Malcolm seemed to get the short end of the stick but he really was a great character and Keating is a great actor.

As for Soval, at first he was just so "Vulcan" and as we saw him more he did become more likeable. Another great actor!

You know, I hadn't even noticed him until I watched Kir'Shara:
