Why Doesn't Worf Speak With A Russian Accent?

It would have been interesting if Worf spoke with the exact same accent as Chekov, reverse Vs and Ws included.

Perhaps an even better explanation (and a less flippant one I might add) is that Worf's character was not fleshed out when TNG began. The whole Russian upbringing was not introduced until they were well into the series.

Was their background even discussed before the episode they showed up in?

I just found this thread and not sure if somebody has pointed it out but Mr Leslie has spoken lines in 4 episodes and is credited in two of those

Was their background even discussed before the episode they showed up in?
Nope. We knew nothing about them until that episode, besides the fact that Worf had been raised by humans on Earth. Ronald D. Moore must have come up with their background when he wrote the episode "Family."

BTW, welcome aboard!

The question then becomes why did they choose to make them Russians?

I always thought it was because in TOS the Klingons were meant to be Space Soviets/Russians.
So the space Russian stand-in was raised by actual Space Russians. Casting Gag!
