Why Does Saavik Say Behind On Vulcan?

^Of course, in the 24th Century, both Carol Marcus and Maltz are still alive - and essential to stopping the "Genesis Wave" (first two novels in Vornholt's series).

The thing is for me, is that Saavik didn't need to be in Star Trek IV at all. All she really did was say to Kirk that "I have not had the opportunity (?!) to tell you about. Your Son. David. Died. Most bravely." Why she couldn't find the time until then to tell him that during the THREE MONTHS since the last movie is beyond me, but there it is.

^Well, we don't know for sure that Saavik was on Vulcan during that time. It's entirely possible that she was off-planet and then returned to assist the crew with last-minute repairs.

Curtis's contract probably had the same sequel-offer clause written in as Alley's from ST II.

Seemed a very typical Vulcan reaction to me. Similar to Spock and Sarek not talking for 18 years, Spock not mentioning his fiance when Chapel used to embarrass herself gushing over him, Spock not mentioning his extra eyelids, and ENT Vulcans denying their mind meld capabilities.

If the Intrepid were a Vulcan "registered" starship," there would be no reason that Starfleet couldn't also have a starship of the same name. At one point both the US and UK navies had ships name Enterprise.

I don't see the Vulcans naming one of their own ships Intrepid, because that name itself carries emotional connotations to it. Vulcans wouldn't use a name like that.

And besides, Spock refers to the exact size of the ship's crew complement: 430, which happens to be the same as your typical Constitution-class ship. You do the math...

Don't forget Spock not mentioning Sybok until STV.

Actually, I just checked the transcript, and Spock refers, twice, to there being four hundred Vulcans on the Intrepid. So you could say that Spock is just rounding down to the nearest hundred... but you know how Spock feels about rounding. ;)

But in seriousness, I do agree with you that Intrepid is most likely a Starfleet vessel. When McCoy asks about the Intrepid, he says "The Intrepid is manned by Vulcans, isn't it?", not something like "The Intrepid is a Vulcan ship, isn't it?". And since Kirk refers to the ship as USS Intrepid in an official log entry, I would think that the writer's intent was that Intrepid was a Starfleet vessel.

Agreed. And the differing crew count (I do believe it is smaller than Kirk's, as Spock wouldn't round down in a case like this) need not denote differing ship class (surely Vulcans could do the same job with less people, being so much better in everything) but need not denote the exact same class, either.

Although it does appear that our heroes think the Intrepid and the Enterprise do not differ technologically - the chances of success are the exact same for both, and it thus adds to the tension and despair that the Intrepid utterly failed.

Perhaps the Vulcans can crew the starship more effectively and can get by with a slightly smaller crew. Or maybe there are 30 non-Vulcans on Intrepid.

We never learned whether even the Constitutions we clearly saw on screen were internally identical, or anywhere close to. It was never said that the other ships that looked similar to Kirk's would have had exactly 430 people aboard; when it was said the Exeter had "all four" of her shuttlecraft remaining, nothing hinted at the Enterprise having the same number; etc.

In fact, we never learn that any starship class would have a "standard" crew complement. Quite to the contrary, when certain ship models are reused, and a crew count mentioned, it's never the same number twice - often nowhere near the ballpark, even. An Oberth may have 80 people aboard, or then just seven; a Miranda may be configured for 26, or 35, or hundreds.

Which is consistent with how flexible starships appear to be, in terms of just about anything.

hey were going to reveal she was pregnant with Spock's child (from their pon farr encounter on Genesis in TSFS), but thought better of it after filming and viewing the scene. (Would have opened up a whole can of gagh no one wanted to deal with.)
Is that why she read the lines saying goodbye in such a awkward uncomfortable way?
Here are the possibilities I could think of:
  1. She was angry with the producers and writers for not having a larger part in the film. I think I saw her at a convention around the time and got that notion.
  2. She was pregnant, and even seeing spock felt awkward for her.
  3. She was trying to convey a vulcan hiding her emotions at saying goodbye, but she didn't quite hit it.

The Saavik character, in my opinion, was exhausted. Her only dialogue in Star Trek IV was basically a reiteration of her line in Star Trek III ("He gave his life to save us"/"David died most bravely"). Her purpose was served.
