Why does church make people so thirsty?

As a server, I notice a lot of things. One of the things I've noticed, and often wondered about, is that people around here chug a lot of drinks. But, it's usually not as bad as it is on Sunday mornings when the church crowd comes in. It's non-stop chug chug chug, refill after refill. It's been a while since I've attended church, but I seem to recall all that was involved is sitting and listening to the pastor preach, then maybe sing a few hymns before calling it a day.

So, why does this make people so thirsty?

they are dehydrated cuz they were crazy drinking before going to Church. Dehydration makes ya dizzy.
The 'Hair of the Dog " shouldn't be done, unless you consider yourself a Priest.

:nyah:

It's more acceptable today to actually have a beverage in the assembly. When I was a kid, that wasn't something civilized, truly devout people did. You could wait to refresh yourself until after service. If you were completely parched, you could discreetly slip out to take a sip at the water fountain. But nowadays, it seems like everyone carries a water bottle everywhere. And many congregations have a coffee bar to encourage before church socializing and to welcome guests. So people carry their coffee into the service.

I'm undecided about this new trend.

I get my coffee fix before I leave for church...

I'm sure God doesn't care if I drink during the service, but our minister would probably not be too happy about it. Can't say I'd blame him either. :)

I thought for sure that "thirsty" was going to have a different meaning here. As in, "Son of a Preacher Man", or the clichés about the preacher's daughter. ;)

There is singing and responsive reading during the service plus discussion during Sunday school. People chat before and after church, so I'm not surprised that people get thirsty.

You're packed in side by side with dozens to hundreds of other parishioners in a cramped (no matter how large it is) room in a wood, concrete, or brick building, body heat and back sweat pouring off the lot of them because you're wearing your formal Sunday best outfit, and depending on the denomination you may have to participate in a bunch of singing and clapping and kneeling and dancing around. It's thirsty work.

I've fainted in church. We used to have to go before breakfast and so I guess eating and drinking first would help. Most likely I'm a sinner and was struck down ;)
