I wonder if the could have gone with Wesley/Leslie Crusher as a kind of yeoman to Picard, maybe in a similar way to the relationship between Charlie Young and President Bartlet on The West Wing.

Yeoman Smith left the Enterprise shorty after the Gary Mitchell Affair. Her coffee and secretary days are behind her. Bringing her up to her appearances in ST:Continues, I head cannon her going to Starfleet Academy for about 4 years, packs on muscle, and gets quickly promoted toEverything about this sounds freaking terrible from a modern perspective

I hope they don't have one, a yeoman assisting the captain adds nothing to the show.
Neither does a lot of possible crew positions if not well written and cast properly, why have a bartender? Well, if the bartender is interesting that a reason by itself. The same goes for a potential yeoman.

Depends on how it is written and the character's interactions with other crew. The concept of a yeoman is not prohibitive in of itself, especially since it is still currently used as a naval billet.
Also, the yeoman on JAG ended up having some more interesting character moments too. It can be fun.
As opposed to all those shows which just filled the cast with the bridge staff despite the fact that many of them didn't really add anything?

I mean I wouldn't complain if they'd finally make the Kirk/Spock pairing canon.
A bartender requires a bar set where they work and isn't just an additional person on the bridge, so it's not exactly the same thing.
What the navy currently does isn't really relevant in my opinion because that's not what Star Trek is about. But if they show a captain with a desk job who spends most of their time in an office then sure, add a Tiner. Tiner worked on JAG because except for a few exceptions his scenes took place in the office. Star Trek was never an office show and the yeoman we did see just handed Kirk stuff and just stood next to his chair otherwise.
You're implying that I wouldn't ditch a bunch of the bridge crew too which isn't true. A lot of them are useless and can be done away with like they did with communications after TOS and the conn officer on TNG after Wesley left. Having an extra in that seat most of the time worked fine. Most Star Trek casts were too bloated and could have lost a few regulars.
Kirk would also have to be "an efficient dispenser of instant coffee".
From the sounds of things he already "provides a welcome change of scenery for eyes that have spent long hours scanning the vast reaches of space."

Agree to disagree and all that jazz. I see nothing wrong with having an administrator or assistant to the captain to support daily business of the ship.
I love Star Trek and all, but Starfleet as an organization struggles with believability. This is a small change that I think would help.

I just realized that Jim Kirk actually had a shorter pre-Captain career than Tim Watters of Red Squad.
