Why do we buy/collect Star Trek books?

As for the Phoenix books, I had to collect most of the Bantams second hand, but I ended up reading "Fate..." before I finally found "Price..." Those books were... bizarre.

"Bizarre" is so much nicer than the words that spring to my mind in relation to those books...

I know I've asked this before without any joy, but does anyone else remember a fanfic "completion" of the Phoenix saga that went on sale around the time of TMP?

I never heard of that -- do you know who it was written by, and what it was called?

Frankly, I never thought that series warranted further installments.

No - just Something Of The Phoenix. It was an A4 mimeographed fanzine (doesn't that take you back!) and all I remember is that it had a pseudo-cover like the Corgi editions of the books (which makes me think it was probably UK based, come to think of it), and was tagged that it was an unofficial conclusion...

I've always thought Omne changed his name to Omega and started using his black hole to take energy from the galaxy... (Three Doctors reference for those not versed in the ways of the Time Lords)

First I've heard of it. The only thing I've been able to track down online is a usenet post, in which someone says "I know that there should have been a third book in the Phoenix series. Price Of The Phoenix and Fate Of The Phoenix were skating on thin ice but the third broke right on through to K/S and only ever came out as a zine AFAIK."

There's no mention of such a fanzine in Joan Marie Verba's history of Trek fanzines, Boldly Writing, but then that book doesn't mention The Reckoning, Janet Walker's 1986 fanfic sequel to Marshak and Culbreath's The Prometheus Design, either.

Thanks - I doubt any history could get every magazine in!

FWIW, I sent Joan Marie Verba a message about this, and she doesn't remember ever hearing about it.

Because I want the story to continue beyond the series. Also, I like to know the background to the characters, what happened before the show started etc.

Mostly becayse I just cant get enough of star trek:)

I'll bet this comprises the "missing chapters" I was always told existed.

PaulSimpson, I know some people talk about the infamous "Courts of Honor" fanzine (which existed only as a collectible poster for about a decade) to have a connection to the "Phoenix" novels, probably because the Female Romulan Commander is in it.

that book doesn't mention The Reckoning, Janet Walker's 1986 fanfic sequel to Marshak and Culbreath's The Prometheus Design, either.

And, as I said, there was supposedly some completion of "Triangle", too.

In the past, I would usually read how-to and/or reference books. Reading story-type books were hit or miss as to whether or not I would get into them--usually miss.

Then, in October 2007, when I decided to get back into ST, I also thought that it would be nice to try to get back into reading ST. A major reason why I feel ST novels (and short stories, etc.) are almost always a hit for me is because I already know the background of most of the characters, races, etc., as opposed to figuring everything out as I go along.

This is also why I had a lot of difficulty getting into New Frontier--too many "foreign" (to me) people and races to keep track of who's who, which race are they, etc. I plan on trying it again someday soon, but this time I've printed out a list of the major characters, what race they are, and any additional helpful info about them. I got this info from Memories Alpha and Beta.

Tim,

I know many members find it useful to keep brief notes that they can refer back to as to character details and it might also prove profitable for you as well. I know it can be hard to keep track of every character in a book let alone a whole series and it just might help you enjoy the books more. Plus writing things down often can help your memory by re-enforcing what you have read.

I like the stories. If I didn't, I wouldn't buy.

That pretty much sums it up for me as well, and, because they are there helps a bit.

It's only been in the last few years (well since 2000) that I've been buying and reading Trek Novels on a regular basis. I don't buy all the series, as I was put off the Enterprise Novels by Last Full Measure and although I'm more of a fan of Voyager than I was, the only Voyager novel I've read is the first Dark Matters Novel which has put me off Ms Golden's other work, although I do now have String Theory book I to read next after what I am reading now! I do though have all the Post Nemesis Next Generation Novels and Titan novels and of course pretty much all the Deep Space Nine Novels post What You Leave Behind.

So, I'm not a fanatical collector of Trek stories, but if I like the sound of something or if it's by a writer or in a series I like, I will pick it up.
