Why do we all lurk in "Miscellaneous" ?

I was just wondering what everyone's motivation was for hanging out in this sub section.
Personally, after attempting to offer my honest opinions on other forums, I found myself ever more reluctant to put forward an opinion, because someone always knows, or appears to know better. (I don't post as often as before)
Or others are more opinionated, or more knowledgeable, or even involved in the writing and production of Trek.
So for someone like me who mostly posts an opinion based on memory, it can be difficult to have your opinion treated with respect.
I also recently contributed to the Enterprise Forum, "Rewatching Enterprise" thread, offering my personal reviews in an episodic fashion (don't ask why I started with Season 3), but just as I got to Season 4, my enthusiasm has waned because it was taking over my life, each review getting ever longer. I hope to go back to it, but my confidence is low now, and in short, my reason for lurking regularly on Miscellaneous, is because I think it's "safer" here, more of a community, and friendlier.
Maybe I'm wrong, what's others thoughts on this ?

I usually hang out in TNZ, where it's always dark for some reason.

In a minute, I'm talking to the nice person!

Anyway, I still like to lurk in Miscellaneous every so often just to see what other folks are up to, and maybe join in on some slightly lighter discussion.

I stay in this end of the pool because, while I love Trek, I have talked about it all I possibly can (for now), and I haven't been able to watch the new show yet,so I have nothing to contribute.

But Scifi, TV & Media, Misc and the Lounges have lots of opportunities to chitchat, play games, and partake in other various time-wasters with my fellow Nerds.

While Trek is nice entertainment, my literary and movie interests lie mainly elsewhere. Occasionally, I haunt the science forum, partly for professional reasons, partly out of fun. TNZ is not my cup of tea at all. I dislike heated arguments and much prefer logical and matter-of-fact discussions. TNZ lacks the tolerance I find the cornerstone for a civilized disagreement.

About 98% of my posts are made in Misc or in the rank lounges because there the posters and mods are the friendliest, the topics are most versatile and there's alwas something interesting going on. Also, because both are not restricted to a limited spectrum of topics, they are the best places for getting to know people better and for making friends (both online and irl). I don't have the money to travel but by posting here I can find out what life is like in other parts of the world and how different people(s) have different solutions for the same problem. Misc is a bit like an airport where people from all over the world meet and interact, only we have no flight schedule that keeps interrupting these interactions. In my opinion, close contact with people from abroad broadens the horizon, is a good social training and a trusty remedy against outdated prejudices.

That's a great post

I came to this forum originally because I was getting back into Trek after not watching it for a while. But also it’s the only forum I know of that’s still super-active all the time. So while I’m here, why not use the forums for other interests?

Miscellaneous is nice to come to, I agree. Though I don't post here much. I have a lot of interests but Star Trek is at the top of my list for entertainment and I love discussing it with fellow fans. So I hang out in the various Star Trek forums a lot. But it's nice to have an area where you can discuss pretty much anything. And yeah, the people around here are pretty nice folks. But to be honest outside the occasional troll, or maybe just overly passionate person, most of the people around TrekBBS are nice folks. I've gotten into my share of debates with others but it doesn't get personal, at least for me (and the mods usually nip things in the bud if something starts getting too heated before it can get out of hand).

I know a few months ago I was going through a rough patch and I posted a thread here about it. I found it helpful, and cathartic. I really couldn't discuss it with people I know in person for a number of reasons so it was nice to come here to air it out. And you know, sometimes it's nice to air something about with people you don't know in person, that you won't see on the street. There's a certain anonymity here that allows people a greater freedom to air out things that for whatever reason you can't, or don't feel comfortable airing out to people you know. But you still need to 'say' it.

For me, airing it out was half the battle. I still had to pull myself out of my funk, but getting it out was a big help.

^ or met me after an exhausting day at work. They say a lady doesn't perspire but glows - after 8 hours in the Bavarian wilderness I am a class O star...

I actually joined TrekBBS back in 2004 mainly to participate in Miscellaneous. I was very new to Trek and didn't have a lot to say about it yet. At that time you had to be a member in order to read Miscellaneous. I had seen other members mention it and so I wanted to join to be able to read and participate. Gradually, I began to post more frequently in the Trek forums, but I still mainly post in Miscellaneous and TV & Media.

when I joined for the first time in 2001, posts in the Lounges and in MISC didn't count towards your postcount. This way posting in both was a good way to stall a bit and give slower friends a chance to catch up so that we could stay together in the same lounges. Rather a lot of posters who were Fleet Captains together with me have become my RL friends.
It's a lot of fun going through the ranks again and making new friends in addition to the old ones. And Misc is the perfect place for getting to know each other since there is such a wide range of topics.
Also, it's propably the most entertaining part of the board and a first class depression remedy :) When I have a really hard day at work I like to come here during my lunch break. I always find something that makes me laugh and saves my day.
