Id be curious to know how much money the former fan sets of 'Star Trek Continues' makes as a fan attraction. CBS bought it right? so now theyre currently paying for its 'storage' out in Georgia or where ever its located.... Knowing its ROI would be a helpful place to start when considering these things.

did CBS bought those? I thought they were *being payed* to have them “official” sets.
But it is a good question: no later set is going to attract more people than the TOS one, also these are built to be much sturdier and safer than most others.
You're thinking of the New Voyages/Phase 2 ones, they're in Ticonderoga, NY and adding the TNG bridge soon.
The Continues sets are Neutral Zone Studios, which are unofficial and unlicensed. I've even seen nudes done on those sets

Are they really going ahead with that? When I visited in 2018, I was told there was a possibility, but nothing was concrete yet. Well worth the visit though.
Yep, if it wasn't for the weight of the parts and transport costs, they'd have used James Cawley's TNG consoles in PIC S3. He posts pics on his FB frequently, helm/nav and the rear consoles are looking great.
Interesting. I wonder where he plans to put the set, as the TOS set takes up much of the room, and from what I remember he's been renting out a former grocery store for it. Again, this comes back to the question of money and places to store them.
Especially in Picard's Ready Room. All those Earl Grey stains probably would have been showing by now.

That’s why I also suggested they be in dead malls that can have server farms—so money can be generated even if foot traffic alone would not sustain them. The sets are OMNI, the rest of the joint…PENTHOUSE, as it were.
server farms take up even MORE space, use a lot of electricity and need a lot of cooling. Also, you now need to compete with the big players. Your suggestion is like recommending a struggling restaurant to also open up an hotel.
Especially if it's a bitcoin mining farm.
Thing is that people need to realize is that mall space is at a premium. It's one of the most expensive in terms of rental space. Renters constantly have to figure foot traffic into whether a place is worth running or not. A healthy mall isn't what it used to be, as the whole concept has long been in decline everywhere.
Case in point, we have a large mall downtown where I live and it was once a thriving mall, but it's been in decline since the late 90's when the main anchor store, a major national chain, had gone bankrupt. The impact was so severe the mall hasn't been able to recover even to this day. Gradually over time, it's become a seedy place most people like to avoid, and if it weren't for the independent movie theatre driving traffic to the mall, it would likely have closed long ago. In order to survive, the mall has had to pivot to offering vacant space for business offices, but those don't exactly drive customer foot traffic to the mall. Meanwhile more and more businesses are closing their storefronts because they receive so little foot traffic.
Indeed. My local city has one mall that was bought out by a local sporting goods chain and used as their store front while also still have some mall stores. Not a lot but enough. It's an interesting mix of that stores own goods, and other retailers.
The other mall nearby is still the more traditional style but definitely not wall to wall stores like it use to be. It costs a lot of money for rent, and maintenance and upkeep alone, not to mention needing utilities and needing a reason for business.
At this point is seems clear that ideas around preserving Star Trek sets are all a fantasy land, with no basis in reality in terms of real world logistics that would be involved. Taking down the sets, moving them, reinstalling them, lighting them and maintaining them all costs money. Rental space costs even more money, storage more money etc.
This is a lost revenue cause in the making, with no promise of ever making money. So naturally CBS/Paramount should do it to satiate a minor group of fans.

No clue, but on James Cawley's Facebook there are pics of the helm/ops consoles which are complete (and were on display in the foyer for a time) and the rear panels which are almost done.
Yeah, Crawley's TOS set museum is essentially in the middle of nowhere (sorry Ticonderogaites, lol), so it's probably not too expensive for rent (or purchase outright). I wonder if it had been built in a large city if the increased attendance would be enough to offset a drastically higher rent - although, it may not be constructed to withstand a zillion nerds trampling through it.
