They did.

During TNG's run, Starlog did an interview with some TNG writers where they talked about trying to do a mirror universe episode. They said the basic of the episode would be that Spock took Kirk's advice, and we were going to see the inplications. For whatever reason, they ended up not doing it (and wouldn't have discussed it with Starlog had they any intention of doing it). This was around TNG season four or five. I was surprised when DS9 eventually did it.

Would have better than "Sub Rosa", that's for damn sure!

Gene R probably thought it would be bad story telling to have a Mirror Universe ep, seeing as he already had one in TOS.

Of course, Berman & Braga got a hold of the show and had to put MU eps in almost every series, building up an 'anticipation' of sorts, and now people expect there to be a MU ep in every series, when really, if not executed properly, it can become over done and just plain out bad writing.

By "almost any series" you mean being overused in DS9 (which Braga had no part of - that was ISB's leadership) and a two-parter late in ENT (under the watch of Manny Coto)?

I thought a Mirror TNG story would have been a great movie idea. Something a general audience could easily comprehend and enjoy. Perhaps even having Evil Spock as the antagonist. Imagine bearded Spock with Picard on a poster. (for those who don't know, the poster image was often the inspiration for the writer's room)

Wasn't it Peter David that wrote the mu novel about an evil Enterprise and crew hunting doen the good one. Wow, what a great spin on the concept.

I would have loved to see this happen. And I would hope it would be better than the awful DS9 MU eps. I love DS9 and those are some of the low points of the entire series for me. They took a great fun concept, and changde it into the most generic "rebels vs. the evil empire" premise...bleh.

This is one of the things I would have liked to have seen in TNG. We had seen alternate timelines and realities, but it would have been fun to see the TNG characters not on the moral high ground for a change, and be all evil and backstabbing, and not being so anal about principals.

It would've been interesting to see one, especially if it were a direct follow up episode to the events in TOS. I also would've liked to see how much more powerful a mirror Ent D might have been.

I agree about Dark Mirror. Great story that could've easily been turned into an episode or movie for that matter.

I like MU, I love it. But not because everyone's mean and everything. I like it, because you get to see these familiar characters completely upside-down.

And even when I love it, I don't need to see it that much. I can't understand why DS9 had to have three episodes of it. For me, it was little too much.

And please, could someone remind me, because it have forgotten; was there any special way they managed to go from universe to universe in DS9? Because in TOS they had that ion storm bothering them - or something like that - but I can't remember the trick they made in DS9. But I really can't get over the fact that they make weekend trips to another universe...(not that they really did but anyway)

But back to the topic of the thread, it would've been nice to see one MU episode in TNG... NOT two.

As has been suggested earlier in this thread, I was just thinking the other day that the reason they didn't have a mirror universe episode is because of what a travesty "The Naked Now" was. It's like the writers thought, 'we've learned our lesson about updating stories from the past series for this crew' after how badly that one turned out. It makes me wonder if we would have got other modern versions of "Star Trek" stories if the first attempt wasn't a complete waste. Something with the Gorn or tribbles might have been kinda rad.
