Why didn't Beyond do better at the Box Office?

I don't think that power marketing ST: Beyond would have made an appreciable blip, but they could have at least tried to do some viral marketing, the kind of stuff that builds interest in the 18-24 market and, you know, generates new fans.

Interesting listening to Simon Pegg's interview with Empire. Mentioned his disappointment about the first trailer but largely because of the use of Sabotage. He sounded pretty miffed that it potentially spoilered the climax more than anything.

There is no doubt Paramount made a blunder of its advertising for Beyond. In many ways Paramount acted like it had a dud on its hands. The only buzz surrounding Beyond was negative until about a month before the movie came out which is far too late to get people excited.

The first teaser trailer was poorly received and Paramount should have immediately responded by putting out a new one. I remember the first time I saw that trailer, it was the only time I had ever seriously considered not seeing a Trek movie in theaters.
That the first trailer was so poorly received, yet upon review is actually a pretty good representation of the movie may have been exactly what made Paramout think they had a dud on their hands.

"This movie was so terrible, we're only going to greenlight ONE £200 million sequel before it hits cinemas instead of two. And we're not cancelling the series, only making the ship uglier!"

I love how some folks are still assuming that Beyond is/will be a "dud."

I don't think Beyond was a dud, in fact I've seen it twice and thought it was a good fun movie. What I was arguing before is that Paramount's marketing campaign for Beyond followed along the lines of what many studios do when they believe they have a bad movie on their hands. When a studio has what they think is a 'bad movie' on their hands, they typically minimize promotion of it until closer to its release date (why waste the marketing money on a dodgy film).

Beyond had a troubled production to start with and Paramount's lack of promotion for months after the first trailer really didn't help in overriding concerns.

I think people are referring to it being a 'dud' financially, which quite frankly it's looking like it is. I think it's going to struggle to get past 300 million worldwide. I'm not knocking the film, I think it's awesome but I'm struggling to see where another 200 million in worldwide box office is going to come from at this point.

Early box office numbers for Wednesday are in and Beyond moved came in 3rd with $2.5 million.

Here's the breakdown:

1. Bourne $4.5 million
2. Bad Moms $3.2 Million
3. Beyond $2.55 Million
4. Secret Life of Pets $2.49

We should have the weekend predictions shortly.

The only marketing they really nailed was the first movie, the rest has had poor marketing. STID was fine, but the whole Khan thing was confusing, unnecessary and stupid. Star Trek Beyond? Even a lot of Trek fans didn't know it came out when it did, I'm sure if it wasn't for that marketing blitz in the week or two before release it would've opened to 50m.

The only people who can determine the financial future of this franchise is Paramount.

STID was reported a "disappointment" and they still made BEY. So, why not just go, enjoy the film and leave the fiscal worries to Paramount?

I'm a little bemused. I wanted to go into some speculation when I looked at the thread over my morning coffee(s), but after looking at the numbers..... it doesn't seem as doom and gloom as this thread makes it sound.

It's not a massive earner, but it's doing alright - and there's still some time to go, other markets to explore and home video releases to hit in. I don't think Paramounts going to lose any sleep (or money) over it.

Because some of us are interested in and enjoy discussing the business behind our interests.

And it's like, at least when I paid my $12, I got to see a movie in return. That's better than some got who paid out more money than that. :shifty:

I never followed this stuff that closely during the run of TOS movies in the 1980s. I just went, waited, went, waited, went, waited, went, and so on. Probably saner all around.

Hey, I'm good for a Blu-ray when they come out. Director's cut, too, if there is one.

I honestly think some of this is we can't understand why the world doesn't see the AWESOMENESS of Trek like we do. (I don't know if I'm serious about that or not. ;) )

hopefully it will do a TGEN in china and push it into the 350-400m range

And Beyond is looking to make substantially less money on a similar budget. That does not inspire confidence.

It's relevant to us because it affects whether we get another Trek film, and what sort of film it will be.
