Why did you like or dislike ST09?

I thought Quinto was just about perfect.
It just goes to show you how subjective this all is. We're both long time TOS fans (although you have a few years on me :)) and we saw completely different things. I've only seen the new film twice, and the first time Quinto's portrayal rubbed me the wrong way. The second time around I was trying to picture Nimoy's version of the character behaving in the same way or saying the same things as the Quinto version, and it was just impossible for me. The funny thing is that I'm not particulary a Spock fan, I've always been partial to the Kirk character, so the visceral reaction I had took me by surprise. I thought Chris Pine actually did a pretty good job capturing the spirit, if not the specifics, of the Kirk character.
I didn't miss the "social relevance," which Trek has sucked at ever since the people making it decided that it was the show's signature contribution to the modern world.
Yeah, that didn't bother me either. Not even a little.
The couple of coincidences bothered me a little - I do think Abrams's one mistake in assembling the thing was cutting the extended version of Spock's conversation with Kirk in the ice cave, which at least addressed the coincidence there.
I agree with this. That small explanation would have went a long way in making the story seem more plausible.
I am glad to see someone else feels the same way I do about Spock. Quinto is a good actor, but I think the character was written with too much outward emotion. The Uhura relationship just feels wrong. The more times I watch the movie the more I notice it. I could not see Nimoy groping Uhura- or anyone- on the transporter pad. Nor could I see him abandoning command of the Enterprise to go save Mommy... not without either giving someone else a plan to follow in his absence or sending someone else while he oversees the mission.

As others have said, the extended cave scene would have explained those coincidences well, especially for a movie depicting our favorite heroes finding their true destiny on the Enterprise.

I agree about Spock.

Quinto's Spock was unprofessional, at times. The story provides a reason why '09 Spock might be more emotional. It doesn't explain why he doesn't act like an officer.

Spock does weird/unprofessional things at times. Like hijacking the ship and keeping "biological" problems a secret. Often to the detriment of ships performance. :vulcan:

Also occasionally shouting...

"THE WOMEN!"

Then, a few eps later, will chide a crewmember for doing the same...

"Quite unnecessary to raise your voice, Lieutenant. Sound the alert."

I pose this as a question. Do you folks think that the general movie-going audience gives "fun" action movies a pass on writing issues?

That this movie was as popular as it was is all the evidence anybody should need of that. The real question is, knowing that as studios do, will we ever get an attempt to secure both the "fun" factor and excellent writing? I'd like to have all the visuals this movie had, peppered with moments of humor, set in the STU somewhere, all wrapped up in a plot that is both unique and challenging.

I'm tired of saying "well, at least it wasn't Nemesis" or "it was better than anything we've had in a long time." While statements like that are true (to me anyway- nothing could convince me XI didn't outshine Nemesis)... it's obvious they're capable of more. They got a massive budget (and the next one will likely be similar) and they have the team of writers who came up with friggen Lost; whats the hold up?

When you try to tell people their "place" they tend to respond defiantly.

I've also found that pretense, pomposity, excessive use of Latin, soporific pontification, and general snobbery also illicit this response from certain people. (Yeah, that's right. I went there...)
