Why did they have to reach warp 10?

I always wondered why they had to reach warp 10 out in the Delta Quadrant? I know it was a big deal, but they had to have known that Voyager didn't have the resources to do proper study and risk management or analysis.

Wouldn't it have been better to collect the material they found, as much of it as possible store it. Get a shuttle up to say warp 9.9999999 to test it then fit Voyager for the stresses of such a high warp and just get back home in a day or less?

I mean priority 1 is to get home.

Once home, Starfleet could do real research and testing. If they could fit a few Intrepid class ships that could just reach the Dominion strike and run back before the Dominion could even respond would be a game changer. No wormhole bottle neck. Just in and out. I don't remember if the episode took place while the war was on.

Starfleet, with Tom, B'elana, and Harry running point could get ships tested and going faster. The whole salamander thing could have been avoided. Maybe with proper testing they would have known that the warp field geometry had to be changed or genetic problems would occur. Or that warp 10 will cause that no matter what and they'll have just keep adding 9s to the warp 9.9+ scale. Or,reset the warp scale so warp 10 is no longer infinite velocity and go warp 10 warp 11 and so on. Warp 9.999999999999 would probably exceed Discovery's spore drive and make intergalactic travel possible.

Anyway, that's my take. What say you?

They couldn't do so for the same reason they found out warp 10 was causing these problems anyway.

Interference of plottronic particles.

(Translation: there really is no good reason for them not to try that, but in that case the plot would 've made it problematic anyway).

It's not totally unreasonable. Considering the warp scale of that era, even the closer you get to warp ten, you are going considerably faster -- like's like Bob Dole fresh off taking Viagra.

Heck, even "Warp 10" I suspect is a small area that could encompass varying speeds, one faster than the other, so you may not likely reach speed that is bad for the ship or you could reach one that is tolerable at shorter intervals.

You can get the crew home faster.

OR, you know, you could study a nebula so you can get more power for more coffee, or decide which innocent race to screw over. Priorities.
