Why did they get a black guy to play Scotty?

Hey, Ronald McDonald is essentially a white blackface so the Star Trek Happy Meal is in the bag.

Now adays all clowns are whiteface. The blackface clowns were all painted white after they realized that white is simply better.

...to creep out little kids.

First, it's going to have to get pregnant.

You offering?

Why are you using a Blackface as an avatar?

Good question!

Let me direct you to the thread which will explain it all.

Let's see.

Where is that thread?

Where oh where.....

Oh, here it is:

(HINT: It's the thread you're in right now.)

You just can't wait for someone to be offended, can you. Juvenile trolling.

MadBaggins, you continue to impress. A couple months back, you were pissed because all the black characters in new-BSG are all minor characters, and as such, they weren't getting oodles of screen time. Now, you're pissed because the white Simon Pegg is too black to be playing Scotty.

Okay, maybe "impress" is too strong a word... maybe I'll just stick with amusing.

Well, if you zoom in on the poster and clarify the image, you get this:

I pity the fool who can't find the ulterior motive!

People actually found that black face stuff funny back then?
Blackface had very little to do with funny. It was more like a uniform.

Erm, not really. It actually was supposed to be funny a good portion of the time. Humor could get pretty racist back then.

Have you ever seen the movie Wonder Bar (1934)? In this film, you have 'Colored People Heaven", and it's filled with watermelon and pork chops hanging from trees. And a black face routine or two, IIRC.

I have watched alot of classic films in my day and so have seen alot of racial stereotypes in film. But this movie takes the cake. Just ghastly.

And it's a Jolson movie, by the way. ;)

I don't know much about Al Jolson, so I skimmed through the Wikipedia article on him. Take a look at it and scroll down to the section "Performing in blackface". I know you have to take Wikipedia with a grain of salt, but if the article is accurate, you might want to cut old Al a little slack. Sounds like he was fairy progressive for his day and probably did more good than harm in helping African-American musical forms and performers be accepted by the mainstream American audience.

Sounds better than white folk heaven if you ask me.

:wtf: :wtf:

That sounds like something Family Guy would pull...

Check out the Eddie Albert listing on Findadeath.com for a classic example of 1960s racism from Green Acres that wouldn't fly on network TV today. Its about 3/4 of the way down the page - look for "Hooterville Symphony Orchestra", and click on the link for the sound file.

I'm all for equalality. But this is fucking ridiculous. If they wanted a new black character in the film they could have invented a new one out of their imaginations instead of turning Scotty black. They already changed Uhura from an average looking black chick (Nichelle Michols) to a hot black chick (the new chick.) That's enough. But to cast some Tuvok look alike at Scotty is beyond the pale (no pun intended.) I dont think I'll be seeing this movie. Although it's still a year away anyway so maybe I'll have changed my mind by then or they will have recast.

I'm still ticked off that the new Scotty will be drinking the wrong kind of Scotch!!! :scream:
