Why did Michael O'Hare leave Babylon 5?

Kate Mulgrew was a replacement for Genevieve Bujold though.
The same could be said of William Shatner who replaced Jeffrey Hunter after the first Star Trek pilot "The Cage" (An excellent production! )

Her footage is on the Voyager first sesaon DVDs.
And, on youtube.

Genevieve Bujold is a good film actress, but she just doesn't have what it takes to pull it off on television. Strange...that's usually supposed to be the other way around. :wtf:

It still is a different situation, because there just plain isn't much to use in comparisons. On top of that, though many fans have the series on DVD and/or broadband access somewhere and therefore access to the footage, I suspect a great many don't have that. What's more, you'd really need more complete episodes in order to get a real sense of Bujold's performance in the role.

She's still a better actress than Mariah Carey! :rommie:

Oh come on.... at least come up with something of a challenge for Bujold.

Gwyneth Paltrow

We all know she won an Academy Award for best actress for Shakespeare in Love, but that is more on account of the film winning the Best Picture Oscar that year. I have seen her act in productions such as Se7en, Sliding Doors, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Shallow Hal, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and Iron Man, and believe me she is a one-dimensional actress with blank facial expressions and flat line delivery.

She's pretty hot though, but there is a good reason why she didn't become "the next Julia Roberts" in Hollywood, because acting just happens to be not one of her strong suits.

But Hunter wasn't replaced becaus the studio didn't want him - Hunter was replaced because he turned down the role (well more his wife turned it down for him).

That's what the late (and great! ) Bob Justman told me at his television production course at UCLA back in September 1999. Rick Berman was the main guest speaker, and I shook the man's rough hand (probably from playing baseball or handling too many files), but that's another story altogether...

Wasn't one of Julia Roberts' strong suits either (her best performances are created in the editing suite), but it's never stopped her.

I guess punching a female actress is grounds for dismissal :wtf:

Pfft. Good story, I suppose but I don't believe it for even a second. How sober was Jerry at the time he told it?

Anybody who's read JMS's posts on the subject has read that he's on record as being willing to hire O'Hare again and that he considers O'Hare a friend. Most people who have to fire somebody for the kind of misbehavior that could have led to lawsuits don't usually have kind things to say about that former employee.

Jerry Doyle's pretty much always highly entertaining and *sometimes* thoughtful and intelligent. Other times he's full of hot air, crude and frankly, a drunken lout.

Jan

Ah Doyle is Irish, nothing wrong with being crude and full of hot air compared with being creepy and uptight. I think if I had to spend a day stuck in an elevator with anyone from B5, it would have to be either Jerry Doyle or Peter Jurassik, my first choice would have been katsulas, but he is sadly no longer with us anymore :(

She is more of a screen actress rather than a stage actress, based on her Broadway reviews from a few years back.

But, then again, the same could be said of Tom Cruise and George Clooney who have never done any theatre since they gained Hollywood fame in 1983 and 1994, respectively.

I must be one of the few people who really enjoyed O'Hare's performance.

The people I've introduced B5 to generally like Sinclair a lot.

One rumor is that he was more used to how stage acting was done than TV, and this annoyed the rest of the cast.

This is unlikely because B5 tended to cast actors more used to stage acting in general anyway.

Another is that JMS realized he gave too many storylines to one char (Minbari time-traveling savior AND the stuff Sheridan did) and decided to even it out.

That's not a rumor, that's what jms said in 1994. And to follow on that, Michael O'Hare said:

Michael O'Hare said:
Yes, [jms & I] had some interesting talks. And I agreed with him that the show needed to take another direction. The Sinclair character had reached its pinnacle of definition.

Doyle said on his radio show that O'Hare was a lunatic. I saw this on another forum about what he said on his show.

FWIW, Michael O'Hare said he got along with all the cast just fine:

Michael O'Hare said:
Got along very well with them. It was a happy family.

And of course he still went to conventions and supported the shows through all five seasons.

I also thought Sinclair was cool, but I agree O'Hare's acting seemed more suited to the stage than for TV. He seemed more used to the small screen when he was on L&O, though maybe that was just because those were guest shots (in one ep, he played an alcoholic who thinks he started a fire and killed somebody, and in the other, he was the father of a murder victim).

Good Will Riker, I am curious to know --- at what university did you hone your expertise and earn your degree on the craft of acting?

Curious you should ask me that:

I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State Long Beach.

I was an English Education and Theatre Arts major there 9 years ago.

Personally, I've always preferred Boxleitner/Sheridan.

Having said that, my appreciation of MOH/Sinclair has increased every time I've rewatched the show.

As for what really happened, I don't really much care. I liked what we ended up with in the show so for all intents and purposes, irrespective of motives, it worked out for the best in the end.
