Why did Kirk go to the Genesis Planet?

-does the planet really have to explode?

Well, it has to, in order to show that Genesis doesn't work (so our heroes aren't near-omnipotent gods from there on).

Bringing people back from dead is counterproductive for drama, unless it is the main motif in the entire series... It is more satisfactory to pull it off only once, in the nick of time, with all the bridges burning fiercely behind our heroes.

My take on it.
The whole theme for Kirk in TWOK was that he beat the no-win scenario in the Kobayashi maru...by changing the rules. Kirk tells David that he's never faced death before until now (Spock's death).

In the final log entry, Kirk states to the ffect that if Genesis is indeed life from death...he must return here again one day. This sort of impl, iedf to me that maybe Kirk had Spock's torpedo programmed to soft land on the genesis planet with the outside chance that it might "revive" Spock somehow. This would fit Kirk's personality of trying to find a way to win even tho Spock has already died. McCoy would probably be privy to this and would also be wanting to hire a ship to return to genesis to find out.

So when it was discovered in TSFS that McCoy had Spock's katra to transfer on to the Vulcans, why not check out what happened to his body first and transfer it back to there instead??

Not bad. Kirk might indeed have had a little science project going - but he couldn't very well stay behind and watch the results when he had a wounded starship full of casualties to take home. And he probably couldn't anticipate that Starfleet would immediately cordon off this science project and keep him from checking on Spock's status.

He'd still have a motivation to monitor the Grissom's reports in this scenario. And only the report that suggested that Spock could still be alive would make Kirk decide that Genesis was indeed worth checking out.

of course, running off without checking on the results of his little science project is what got them in all this trouble in TWOK in the first place. If Kirk had check on Khan, he porbably wouldn't have been so, uh, wrathful... ;)

Sarek only tells Kirk Spock's Katra is alive in McCoy and he has to get it to Mount Seleya .
Still Kirk's first reaction is to want to leave for Genesis.

Just watched the movie again and figured out why. The scene where McCoy breaks into Spock's quarters he first says

"Jim... You left me on Genesis." Then he went on about taking him home and to Mt. Salaya.

But after Kirk learned of Spock's Katra being in McCoy, he realized he had to get Spock from Genesis and that Spock's body must have survived or he wouldn't have said that he was on Genesis.

Kirk put two and two together. And the novelization mentioned that there was news that the coffin had softlanded.

Soi am watching it again right now... the logic still feels choppy... i think if they altered the dialogue a bit when the crew is told they have shore leave...at least for Kirk to go to Genesis to get direct updates or something... the later scene with Sarek kinda sorta justifies at least getting McCoy off planet. But they also shold have mentioned the body.

All these years later, it STILL does NOT make sense (on screen)...but still gives many of the characters some good scenes.

Closing, guys. Morpheus 02, please check the date of the response before you did. This thread hasn't been posted in for ten years. It's past the expiration date. Thank you for your attention.
