Why did Doohan hate Shatner?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I'm always stuck with the vision of seeing Shatner helping an ill Doohan off stage during the nickelodeon tv show awards. That was really a sign to me that bygones were bygones.

Or guilty conscience for treating him bad over several decades. ;) I'm sure Shatner would help anyone who was frail to leave a stage.

You can read hundreds of "reasons" into actions.

Shatner can do what ever the hell he wants and its A-OK with me.Captain Kirk will always be my numero uno.Scotty could have been played by anyone and Star Trek still would have been the same show, i cant same the same about the Captain, IMO.
Yeah, it might've actually been someone who acted and delivered dialog normally....

Yeah...that'd be great...another "normal actor" playing an extraordinary role.

The Shat's acting is at the core of what made Kirk so awesome.
Take the....pauses...and the....DRAMA...awayfromKirk...and............you have....dull dull dull.

I have been to dozens of Trek conventions, starting in the late 70s. I have heard the lower rung actors bitch and bitch how hard it was to escape Trek's shadow. Well, Shatner did it, and so they are jealous hacks.
Well, at least that shadow allowed Nichelle Nichols to stretchout her thespian muscles in 70's classics like Truck Turner! :guffaw:

With each point you listed you couldn't be further away from the truth.

1) Doohan wasn't jealous of Shatner. On the set and at the parties he would avoid the man because he thought Bill was racist, sexist and intolerant.

2) Bill never suggested Jimmy for the part. Bill only suggested that Star Trek could do without an engineer (Doohan) which Jimmy never forgave him.

3) Doohan and Grace Lee Whitney were always best of friends (at one time more than that) right until his death. He was never known to force issues with women. Jimmy worshipped women. All women. But one of the NBC executives working for Star Trek was renowned for being a pest and forcing himself on femal staff. And this person who shall not be named raped Grace, harrassed Nichelle and attacked Takei on several occasions. The person to stand up to him was not Bill Shatner. It was Doohan who got severely reprimanded by a bunch of hypocrites, for being a caring, courageous friend at all times.

That, my friend, is the truth as I know it, right out of the mouth of somebody who is not here to defend himself. So I have to do it for him.

That's super interesting stuff thanks a lot Sarah, do you know know why he thought Bill was racist and intolerant?

Believe it or not I never knew these two had problems.

Yeah I didn't know about it either, I knew that everyone sorta .. disliked Bill 'somewhat' but then I read Shatner's Star Trek memories and he wrote that Nichelle told him how everyone disliked him and he wasn't even aware of it, but he finally sorta talked to them except Doohan who refused to be interviewed by Shatner.

And then I read George Takei's book and he really described how Doohan hated Bill, way more than the average Star Trek crew member. Hence this thread.

No, actually it'd lose some of the corn factor and make it more accesssable to people who would otherwise be repelled by Shatner's horrible delivery. It'd also take away one of the biggest things that Star Trek is made fun of for.

The Shat wasn't exactly a great actor back in the '60s. Fortuantely he got better at it by the time the movies came out.

From what I read on his blog, Wil Wheaton didn't much care for him either.

Yah but it doesn't mean you hate their guts
Somehow, I doubt that Doohan would have harbored his dislike of Shatner for all those years had Star Trek not become a worldwide phenomenon.

Doohan disliked Shatner (for a good reason), and also was jealous of his nemesis's success.

.
As for Doohans personality Wikipedia has this to say; "Doohan was considered by some to be one of the most giving and affable stars of the Star Trek franchise".

I had the good fortune to know Jimmy Doohan. He is as Wikipedia describes him. He was gracious, kind and really would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
The times I met Shatner, he was just the opposite.

Why wouldn't he like Shatner? Did they ever do anything?
Apparently when ST5 was filming, Wil was brought down from the TNG set to the ST5 shuttlebay set by someone who worked at both shoots and introduced them, and to make a long story short, The Shat was a prick to him, so much so that GR made him apologize to the kid.

I disagree. Shatner is the King. Of course it's cornball to some degree...everyone knows it...even the Shat does. And, like him and fans of his performances, I embrace the cheese, and have even learned to LOVE it.

Classic Shatner...to me...that's awesome. :p:techman:

Anyway...I have no idea what he's like personally other than how he has portrayed himself as in various media (in which he seems like, at least at present, a pretty nice dude), so I can't say that he's a wonderful all-around guy. Sound like he's certainly stepped on some toes in his professional life.
But performances like the one above...Trek would not have been as cool as it was without those moments IMO.

wow really? Any details on that?

You must be very young?

Wait till you're in a job where people have high expectations of your performance, and you want to impress people, and a work colleague is deliberately setting you up for failure in hundreds of little niggly ways that make you look bad if you even start to complain about them.

Not that I'm saying that's what Shatner did to Doohan.

re Wil Wheaton. Wow really? Any details on that?

He blogged about it, and it's in one of his autobiographical books, IIRC.

Some people don't get on with other people.......Welcome to the human race, we do hope you stay is a pleasant one, if not refunds can be issued on exit.

If you honestly like the corn, then there isn't anything for it. I don't like it, and I honestly couldn't care less about Shatner being Kirk or someone else playing the character.

Ask and you shall receive. ;)

what's interesting (and our luck) is that the scenes these two were in ALWAYS shone. that's a blessing for us all.
