There's no indication that Riker was hard on Barclay in "Hollow Pursuits" for any reason other than Barclay's abnormally poor performance. (Wesley looked like a seasoned pro next to him.) Riker didn't need any other reason. His 180-degree turn in his behavior towards Barclay in "The Nth Degree" just proves that it was never personal, it was professional.
