Why aren't there any Live-Action Mecha shows

Well, there's rumors of a live action Full Metal Panic so who knows *shrug*

Theres also talk of a live action Ghost in the Shell movie so thats two possible movies featuring mechs

I'd do a variation of Bubble Gum Crisis. If Movies like Ultra Violet and The Matrix movies can come out, I am sure a BGC can work as long as it is done differently from the Anime and books and games. Sex sells and that's what you would get, getting in and out of that battle armor.

I think a lot of it has to do with cost.

Mecha really isn't "brandable" enough to warrant a feature, and the cost to do the CGI convincingly week in and week out would be astronomical.

I gotta disagree. There are plenty of kids shows that have computer animated humanoids that show that mo-cap is feasible for a weekly show, and there are also plenty of shows that show that blending CGI with live action will look realistic.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that cost is the reason they don't do it.

CGI is still really expensive.

Most shows that use it, still do so in great moderation--or have a huge budget.

A mecha show would never be popular enough to have such a budget.

In other words, it's not fiscally feasible.

Mentioned Gaiking, found the trailer.

Also, still from the trailer for Battle:LA of mecha suit:

Does GitS count? Their mechs were essentially cars that could jump.*

*And even then I doubt the efficacy of a two-ton Tachikoma leaping from rooftop to rooftop.

Meh mecha anime or otherwise were never meant to be very realistic in the first place they are just an excuse to make cool toys. :techman:

The only "real" in the real robot genre is the fact that the mechs themselves are treated like tools in a military organization not the technology that goes into them. I find it ludicrous that people criticize mecha for being unrealistic when other science fiction properties get away with much greater offenses to science and engineering (see Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.).

I don't see the need for a live action mech show animated stuff pretty much has it covered and if someone doesn't like cartoons then that's their problem. imo

The most realistic take on mecha I've seen is the Armored Trooper VOTOMS series.

Not really, it makes sense to amplify the most complex organism with the most complex brain on the planet into something that can navigate large portions of the terrain on the planet...its why the US Army is devoting so much money to it now, some autonomous, some not:

My point still stands the stuff in your links are valid but those are nothing like what is typically depicted in a mech anime like Gundam or Macross as opposed to a quadrupedal walking robot or a man sized powered armor.

Obviously the links are primitive compared to the anime sci-fi, but the point is they can definitely head in that direction. They have to start somewhere. Ever see where Univac started? Never thought you could hold a 1ghz processor in your handheld phone if you were around then..

Because most people do not like mechas. That's in my expert opinion as a common person. :) Seriously, it really is my most disliked kind of anime.

Depends on the people you're asking. A lot of people in the different communities (even in the fansubbing scene) are more fed up with the high school stuff.

Its funny the mecha stuff is what I like MOST! Here's why...not because I have a specific NEED for them to be in my anime, its just the "hard sf" type of anime usually includes it. I am far less interested in fantasy, high school or other sillier sub-genres of anime. Of course some of my favorite anime have no mecha in it whatsoever.

I think our discussion here really highlights the reason why. We're talking about a rare breed of sf/f fans here. I mean, anime fans are already quite rare in the grand scheme of things, not to mention those who like mecha.

I myself could only tolerate mecha after years of anime watching experience. It used to be a really really huge turn off. I think most common folks (who didn't grow up in Japan) would have the same reaction.
