Why aren't old threads deleted automatically?

You know, old threads that someone brings back after years of silence? Doing that isn't allowed....

Is there or are there reasons old threads aren't thrown away so they can't be brought back and annoy the moderators? Are those threads there for anyone to read later? Are those threads left there to be viewed later by the original poster?

Also, if not deleted, should there be an automatic lock after some time so it's not possible to reply anymore?

Since this thread is about how the board is run, it should go in QSF. Normally I would just move it there... but these questions have been asked in QSF already. So instead, I am just going to provide some links to a few earlier threads in QSF on these subjects, and then close the thread. If you feel these old threads don't address your specific concerns, then any follow-ups around this issue should be posted in QSF. Thank you.
